  • Comedy Podcasts Rival Music 0 comments

When it comes to online audio, music is king. This has been proven by the popularity of music streaming sites like Pandora and Spotify. However, for more diversified audio platforms, comedy podcasts are able to compete with their musical counterparts.

Audioboom Group PLC's (BOOM.L) social media platform Audioboo, for example, has comedy channels that are able to trump music programs.

Of the 2,000 channels featured by Audioboo, more than 150 are about comedy while more than 300 are about music.

Consistently appearing in its "hot channels" listing, however, are comedy shows that are either broadcast exclusively at the software as a service (SaaS) platform or are re-posted from blogs or online radio.

Since Audioboo is positioning itself as a leader in spoken word content, it has become a hub for media networks and individual podcasters. Users are able to upload and share their audio clips for free, as long as it is within the 10-minute limitation while heavy users can pay for a premium account or a branded channel.

Comedians have come to love the platform, which allows audio players to be embedded on Twitter, Facebook and websites.

English comedian and actor Stephen Fry, for example, were among the first and loyal fans of Audioboo. Many of his works are published in BBC's channels on the site.

Back in 2011, an article on The Hollywood Reporter has said that podcasts are "comedy's second coming."

It cited the case of Adam Carolla, whose CBS radio show was cancelled in 2009, but was able to gather an audience ten times larger with his daily podcast.

And now, the potential is much higher because of the recent upsurge in podcast consumption.

Josh Wolk of Vulture.com last year pointed out that, "On a podcast, a comedian can do exactly what he or she thinks is funny, with no compromise, no concessions to rating or demographic considerations. They're a way to grow an audience that loves your humor, and they have the potential to boost a comic's career."

Platforms like Audioboo are especially helpful for those just starting out since it provides a ready audience and distribution platform.

The main challenge would be how to economically sustain the channels. Those who are already successful can derive their income from other sources such as event bookings and book publications. Fortunately, sites like Audioboo already offer revenue sharing options to channel owners through advertisements.
