A recent Gallup poll asked consumers whether they were reducing their spending and/or increasing their saving, and if so, whether they expected those changes to be temporary or permanent. A surprisingly large group said they expected to be resetting their expenditure and savings levels for good:
Consumers helped propel the U.S.'s economic growth in the third quarter, but unemployment and tight credit are hampering their ability to lead a sustainable recovery -- and it isn't clear what part of the economy can replace them.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumers cut spending in September and turned gloomier this month, underscoring the fragile nature of the economy's recovery even as signs emerged that manufacturing activity may be picking up.
