At Seasonal Odds we examined how Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) and JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM) typically perform in January. While the markets usually face a difficult January overall, Goldman Sachs has historically proven a positive outlier, eking out a 0.39% gain on average in January over the last 5 years, compared to a 1.51% loss in the S&P 500. JP Morgan, however, actually declines more precipitously than does the overall market, losing on average 2.60% in January over the last 5 years.
