    Investing in dividend paying companies is considered a relatively low risk way of investing in the stock market. The reason behind it is when you invest in dividend paying stocks; other investors want to buy in as well because of increasing dividends. Therefore this, in a nutshell makes the investment a little less risky.

    Dividend paying stocks can provide investors with tangible returns on a regular basis regardless of market conditions. Always remember that dividends can be increased, decreased or eliminated at any time without prior notice.

    In this article I am sharing five ex dividend stocks of May 2013 which you can consider for your portfolio.

    Solar Senior Capital Ltd (NASDAQ: SUNS) -

    Solar Senior Capital Ltd. is a closed-end, externally managed, non-diversified management investment company. It invests primarily in leveraged, middle-market companies in the form of senior secured loans, including first lien, unitrache and second lien debt instrument. The company invests in the United States middle market companies. Its investment objective is to seek to maximize current income, consistent with the preservation of capital. It is managed by Solar Capital Partners, LLC. As of December 31, 2012 its portfolio was comprised of debt investments in 31 portfolio companies.

    It has a market capitalization of 211.87 Million, EPS is 1.12, P/E ratio is 16.38 and the dividend yield is 7.66% at the annual dividend payout of 0.12.

    Tortoise Energy Capital Corporation (NYSE: TYY) -

    Tortoise Energy Capital Corporation is a closed-end investment company which invests in equity securities of Master Limited Partnerships and their affiliates in the energy infrastructure sector. The company provides its stockholders an alternative to investing directly in MLPs and their affiliates. Its investments are primarily in mid-stream operations, which typically produce steady cash flows with less exposure to commodity prices than many alternative investments in the broader energy industry.

    The company has a market capitalization of 803.79 Million, EPS is 3.32, P/E ratio is 9.73 and the dividend yield is 5.22% at the annual dividend payout of 0.42.

    Avista Corp (NYSE: AVA) -

    Avista Corporation is an energy company. It is engaged in the generation, transmission and distributing of energy, as well as other energy-related business. the company operates in two business segments: Avista Utilities and Ecova, Inc. Ecova is an indirect subsidiary of Avista Corp. it provides expense management services for utility and telecom needs, as well as strategic energy management and efficiency services.

    The company has a market capitalization of 1.62 Billion, EPS is 1.38, P/E ratio is 19.61 and the dividend yield is 4.53% at the annual dividend payout of 0.31.

    LTC Properties Inc. (NYSE: LTC) -

    LTC Properties, Inc. a health care real estate investment trust. It invests in senior housing and long term care properties through property lease transactions, mortgage loans and other investments. In May 2012, the company acquired a 3.16 acre vacant parcel of land in Colorado. In July 2012, the Company acquired a skilled nursing property with 90 licensed beds.

    The company has a market capitalization of 1.38 Billion, EPS is 1.57, P/E ratio is 26.86 and the dividend yield is 4.40% at the annual dividend payout of 0.16.

    Thomson Reuters Corporation (NYSE:USA) (NYSE: TRI) -

    Thomson Reuters Corporation is a provider of information for the world's businesses and professionals. It is organized in four business units: Financial & Risk, Legal, Tax & Accounting and Intellectual Property & Science. Its headquarters are located in New York, New York with key operations in the United Kingdom, India, Eagan, Minnesota and Stamford, Connecticut. In June 2013, the NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc. acquired Thomson Reuters Investor Relations, Public Relations and Multimedia Solutions businesses, which provide insight, analytics and communications solutions.

    It has a market capitalization of 28.01 Billion, EPS is 2.00, P/E ratio is 16.93 and the dividend yield is 3.85% at the annual dividend payout of 0.32.
