The whole world watched steve jobs take out Apple's ipad and display its style and function. As an apple enthusiast, I watched the event live. My initial reaction to the device is neutral and slightly negative. I kept asking myself, if the device was available today, would I buy it?
My initial answer was NO. During the following days, I kept on thinking more and more about the device and my perspective has changed to be more positive.
Why was my initial reaction negative?
- It was not very convenient to use the device if you have to type a lot (an email, an article etc.,) You had to find a place where you can elevate your legs and create a base.
- It is hard to hold it with one hand and type (like iphone which has a much small form factor).
Please note that these reactions are based on the photos and videos of the product i.e., with out actually trying it out.
What made me change my mind?
I can think of a variety of use cases this device can be used at home, work or on the go in addition to the obvious (which I am not going to repeat).
- Most people today have a netbook/laptop at home and a digital photo frame. This device can be both and can be cost effective. When you dont need your computer, it can become digital photo frame.
- You can watch the TV programs on your DVR in the device at home or outside (using the sling player app).
- All the cool apps on the iphone/ipod touch platform can run on the device and new apps which will be custom made for this device.
- Apple can penetrate into enterprise space with this device, imagine physicians running around with an ipad in hand and fedex delivery person asking you to sign on an ipad. This can be done through building apps.
I can think of lot more. I think we will see the full potential once the device comes out. As iphone had a dramatic impact on what Apple stands for, I think ipad is another blockbuster in the making.
