In the early 1990s, during the middle of a secular bull market, I began work on "A Modern Approach To Graham and Dodd Investing," that was not particularly suited for the decade of the 1990s, but was ideally suited for the following "Lost Decade" of the 2000s.

Former President Clinton won the release of two young female American journalists in North korea. Hillary Clinton rightly said that if she were President, she would have used the "First Gentleman" as a roving ambassador. Apparently Obama agreed.

After Clinto met with high level North Korean officials, he was escorted back to the plane with the girls in tow. They had been "pardoned" after convictions for spying, that could have led to twelve years of hard labor. Apparently, the North Koreans wanted to be appeased in some way. While Clinton wasn't exactly begging for the girls' release, he was paying "tribute" after a fashion. This allowed the North Koreans to "save face," an important consideration in East Asia.

The kidnapping may have been done for internal political purposes as much as anything else. But it illustrates that diplomatic relations with a rogue nation like North Korea are built on quicksand.
