8/15/14 Stoxline is a good one to read to understand a little about technical trading indicators.

Note the headline: Stoxline rating system posted a SELL today, downgraded from higher rating. This stock seems to be ready for a new bearish move. So you may continue to hold short positions or sell your long positions. You are relatively safe to short or sell now, downward move is expected.

Now look further into the algorithm detail report:
Price and moving averages has closed above its Short term moving average. Short term moving average is currently above mid-term; AND above long term moving averages. From the relationship between price and moving averages; we can see that: This stock is BULLISH in short-term; and BULLISH in mid-long term.
SQNM has closed below upper band by 39.4%. Bollinger Bands are 16.2% narrower than normal. The current width of the bands does not suggest anything about the future direction or movement of prices

    Algorithm info:
Six months: 4.77 One year: 5.57

    Support1: 3.75 Support2: 3.55

    Resistance1: 4.08 Resistance2: 4.77

Summary: Stoxline is an example of technical trading. Computers are generating a ton of trading volume these days and algorithms are creating buy/sell momentum. Their conclusions with SQNM:

Price above moving averages with short term and long term trends bullish.
Down side support (resistance) at 4% below close
    Pivot point 1% below close
    6 month price target $4.77 up 22%
    1 yr price target $5.57 up 43%
    Conclusion: SELL

Personal opinion: Retail traders can't compete with computers so fundamentals are far more critical to long term success but use technical info to improve timing decisions.

Disclosure: The author is long SQNM.
