I'm a retired CPA who spent the majority of his working career in technology companies. My work resume included management stints at Atari Inc, Daisy Systems Corp, Symantec Corp and Visio Corp. My last position at Visio (VSIO) was as CFO and VP Finance and Operations.
The total available market for Maternit21+ looks to follow a pretty predictable path. First the high risk pregnancy which is estimated at 750k annually. Next comes replacing the Maternal Serum Screen (MSS) test. Verinata's website states the run rate is 2.6m annually. The last stage is to build enough momentum and trust to get to the point where the test is routinely offered to every pregnant woman. or over 4m per year.
The MSS test does a very poor job of screening for T21 and T18. It does screen for Spina Bifida. I expect at some point, Sequenom will include this screen in their LDT to eliminate any reason for a doctor to run the MSS. Especially considering this test is quite unreliable. This test appears to have minimal value which is consistent with it's price which appears to be under $500. http://genetics.emory.edu/docs/Emory_Hum...
Here is a report from the Genetics Committee of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada dated last year. Sounds like they are already looking forward:
RECOMMENDATIONS 1. All pregnant women in Canada, regardless of age, should be offered, through an informed counselling process, the option of a prenatal screening test for the most common clinically significant fetal aneuploidies in addition to a second trimester ultrasound for dating, assessment of fetal anatomy, and detection of multiples http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21749...
