Consumer Pysche Remains Fragile

The erosion in the psyche of the consumer is on full display within the Conference Board’s confidence measure, which has declined by 52% since peaking in July 2007. While much is made about consumers having repaired balance sheets which hold the cash to be unleashed at the malls, there is a reason the savings rate has ranged between 5% and 8.2% going on two years. The reason, a lack of confidence in present situations and the future.
