    The last ten years will go down as a "Lost Decade" in equities or, as the Wall Street Journal puts it, "A Decade of Overreaching" (see below). That is not completely fair because if you had been a stock picker following generational trends, rather than an indexer following Wall Street, the last decade would have been far better than you think.

    The chart below of Apple, Amazon and the S&P 500 show that although the index has lost 24 percent over the last ten years, Apple has returned 720 percent and Amazon a mere 77 percent.

    The next decade will bring about a new batch of winners. We believe the key to finding these undervalued "Gems" is emerging generational demand. For fun we will look at our top ten generational winners for the next decade in our Age Curve 2010 outlook issue, to be published in mid January.

    It was the best of times...oh, who are we kidding? It was pretty much the worst of times on Wall Street in the 2000s.

    Investors lost a bundle, especially when factoring inflation. Executives made a bundle, but in doing so, many lost their jobs and became public enemy No. 1. And, as an industry, Wall Street stands at a post-1930s low in the public consciousness - ranking somewhere above murderers and rapists and below politicians on the take.

    But even with the ruin for which Wall Street was responsible, the media - in its lust to play the spoiler and lift itself up - promoted or created plenty of manufactured crises that look almost silly today compared to the hara-kiri financial industry gave us recently.
