“By a continuing process of inflation, government can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens.”

        -- John Maynard Keynes

We're not sure whose bright idea it was to write a story for publication yesterday about how Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, suddenly, were gainly broad public bipartisan support for continued existence, that there was general agreement among ALL SIDES of the political spectrum that America needed FNM and FRE to survive, no matter how much it cost.

Well, it cost our short position in FRE substantially.

We closed positions today with VERY MIXED results: down 10%, up 10%, up 6%, down 10%, up 22%, up 20%, up 12%, down 29% (FRE), up 6%.

This market is really a VERY difficult market because we are now trading in a very narrow consolidation pattern that is getting tighter and tighter: less movement up, less movement down.

A consolidation precedes a break in one or the other direction.  Some interesting articles in SA suggest this direction will be higher, since the blue-chips (MRK, IBM, JNJ...) have already broken out to the top side.  I'm not convinced this is logical.  Small caps do not look very strong at the moment.  Small caps are really the foundation of the market, and give market trading its breadth.

But one can't really argue a bearish strength from technicals.  The bearish arguments are all in fundamentals at the moment.  The technicals are really pretty bullish.

    DAILY PORTFOLIO

Our daily portfolio is up 12%, with the first trade being on 6/29/09 -- so this is roughly a 25% annualized rate.  Note: we are also including the number of short trades in each portfolio and the percentage of long trades to show how overwhelming the bullish trend is at the moment.  These percentages should begin to change as time goes on.
