When advanced skilled workers are sitting on the sidelines, America is losing its tax base as well as its leadership positions in cutting-edge and emerging technologies.
Although many in the media are only finding out about this now, skilled and advanced degreed workers are not finding jobs that take advantage of their skill sets. There is a lot of talent sitting on the sidelines while companies continue to bring in cheap skilled labor through Visa programs claiming there is shortage when there isn't.
America has always been on the cutting-edge of emerging technologies and has created new and broad-based industry segments as those technologies grow.
The big question becomes, "Where is the next big job surge?" because many who have a lot of diversified talent are not finding work. It's not just those coming off of the Space Program, it is everyone in many high-tech and software development areas.
Shovel-ready projects did not work in the initial TARP projects because the segment looking for work was more in the technology and engineering fields. Maybe shovel-ready should have been keyboard-ready to have made a real impact on the economy.

Education, experience, business savvy--none of it matters. Corporate bozos want us to believe we need H1B visas. Reality is we have a ready-to-go high tech labor force sitting on the sidelines because "cheap" is what companies want--not talent. We're going down the tubes in this country and greed is killing us faster than anything. The same companies that are shunning those of us on the sidelines with decent education and skills are the same companies that look to us to buy their product. Enjoy what's left for profit now cause people are not going to keep buying products when there is no money by which to purchase them. There is a crisis of ethics and integrity in this country and it certainly doesn't look like there is any hope of resolution soon. At what point have we reached when someone with a PhD in engineering gets laid off from Lockheed Martin? Shall we all just hit the streets since America's companies seem to be pushing us there? Many people are leaving the U.S. and heading to other countries. I sincerely doubt with how they have been treated that they will be anxious to return. The tax base is gone. The alcoholics enjoying their disability checks, along with thousands of others who are anything but "disabled" are in for a rude awakening just as recipients of welfare and other programs. When people are not working, the tax base erodes. When there is no tax base, the give-me, give-me, give-me programs have no funding. For having solid skills and background and for working my beehind off while obtaining four degrees, I would like to know why and when being American became un-American!

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.
Additional disclosure: I have been writing about the changes in the dynamics of the high-tech work area for over the last decade.
