    As was briefly perhaps touched on in the last instablog post, democracy can take many different shapes and forms. One could argue that harking back to our "founding fathers", is somewhat of a straw-man argument since, the changes which took place after the civil war, have in the minds of at least a few historians, changed the US as it was previous to the civil war to something different entirely. Essentially asserting the dominance of the federalist approach while kind of reducing to a whimper the more Jeffersonian approach to things. This is just my vague take on it, so if someone were a historian with a special knack for this "transformation" I would be very intrigued and interested to hear their thoughts on this sort of change which revolved around the post-civil war period. Either way, I came across this article recently from good old "Reason Magazine", which seemed to put forth an interesting argument that seemed lacking perhaps in so far at least as the media I had come across to date on the topic of the government shutdown. This piece's author argues that the shutdown is the US form of govt. working as planned per se, or at least its legislative process working as it should. Either way, perhaps some may find this an interesting read given the abundance of one sided-anti-shutdown, pieces that one tends to come across;
