Hydrogen fuel-cell specialist AFC Energy PLC (AIM: AFC) has entered into a non-binding agreement with WSP Group (LSE: WSH) with the intention of building and operating a power station based upon AFC Energy's fuel cell systems.

“This facility will showcase our technology for generating electricity from hydrogen at almost twice the efficiency of combined heat and power turbines”, AFC Energy chief executive Ian Balchin commented, “This project is entirely consistent with both our commercial and technical development plans and we believe it will help to accelerate our commercialisation."

Under first stage of the project the partnership intends to build a 50 KiloWatt (kW) power station in order to demonstrate the technology’s capability as part of an integrated power station. During the second stage the partnership intends to build a 1 Megawatt power station, subject to commercial support.

WSP’s Environment and Energy division provides for the energy and natural resources industry. Additionally it advises on renewable energy strategies, carbon foot-printing, waste-to-energy initiatives among its broad range of environmentally focused services.

Both AFC Energy and WSP will be inviting other organisations to participate in the project and contribute towards the showcase power station.
