  • Rumor Mill Buzzes With IPhone 6 Speculation 0 comments
    Jan 17, 2014 6:49 AM | about stocks: AAPL

As the tech world moves into the New Year, buzz continues to follow the next-generation iPhone due to launch sometime in 2014. Rumors that began even before the release of the most recent iPhones 5s and 5c in September now focus on specifications of the forthcoming model, most particularly on the screen size, glass composition and camera of what has been popularly dubbed the iPhone 6. In his December letter to employees, Apple CEO Tim Cook even hinted at the exciting changes to come:

"We have a lot to look forward to in 2014, including some big plans that we think customers are going to love," Cook wrote.

The most prevalent speculation on the iPhone 6 has been focused on its screen size, which is expected to increase. Rumors suggest a screen ranging from 4.7 to 5.7 inches, or perhaps a dual release offering both sizes, which would make the iPhone comparable with competing Android and Windows phones. But Cook is still focused on the quality of the display, rather than its size alone.

"My view continues to be that iPhone 5 has the best display in the industry," Cook said last year during the company's Q2 financial results call. "We always strive to create the very best display. Some customers value large screen size. Others value other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, reflectivity, power consumption, compatibility of apps, and portability. Our competitors have made some significant tradeoffs in many of these areas to ship a larger display. We would not ship a larger display iPhone while these tradeoffs exist."

But recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple and its suppliers are testing larger screens for the iPhone 6. According to the report, Apple has asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than 4 inches. The current iPhone 5s has a 4-inch screen. In fact, Bloomberg reports that two models are planned for release in the second half of 2014, both featuring larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges.

Other iPhone rumors suggest the tech giant may move away from Corning Gorilla Glass currently used for its displays. Macrumors reports that Apple has ramped up production of sapphire glass, which is currently used only for small iPhone elements, such as its camera lens and the home button on the 5s. Previously, Sapphire Glass has been too expensive to realistically produce in large quantities, but Apple recently partnered with GT Advanced to produce more sapphire glass at a lower cost.

Many reports revolve around the thickness of the next-generation iPhone. In fact, the South Korean publication ET News has reported the eighth-generation iPhone, which it dubbed the iPhone Air, will measure a mere 6 millimeters thick, compared to the 7.6-millimeter iPhone 5s and the 8.97-millimeter iPhone 5c. The update would decrease the thickness of the device by a full 20 percent.

Finally, the China Post reported that the iPhone 6 will not come with an upgraded camera. Instead of offering a 13- or 16-megapixel camera, it will feature another 8-megapixel model with improved optical image stabilization.

"Apple's decision is based on the design requirement to retain the handset's more portable form factor," analysts from Nomura Securities told the China Post.
