I could put on this bio my education, work experience, investment strategy, and a nice thin (if I can find one) picture of me in a suit looking *smart*. Sorry but that's not my intent here. Sure I invest, help family make financial decisions, and make a ton of mistakes along the way. But my time... More

Interesting Times For All Commodities And Investments!! CHAPTER 4......
  • Interesting Times For All Commodities And Investments!! PORTFOLIO #9....... 136 comments
    Oct 28, 2013 7:06 PM

THIS CHAPTER IS FOR POSTINGS FOR THE PORTFOLIO CHALLENGE ONLY !!

SO THAT ALL UNDERSTAND ANY POST FOR TRADES MADE DURING TRADING HOURS THE CLOSING PRICE OF THAT DAY IS USED. IMPORTANT CHANGE,,,,,,IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS EXPERIENCE MORE LIFE LIKE WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE ORIGINAL RULE THAT YOU HAVE UP TO THE MARKET OPEN TO GET THAT DAYS OPENING PRICE..

ALSO OPEN FOR DISCUSSION IS THE POSSIBILITY OF PLACING A STOP ON YOUR TARDE ONCE! WE NEED TO SEE IF THE IT STAFF CAN HANDLE THIS BUT WOULD LIKE COMMENTS ABOUT THIS..

YOU MUST OWN A STOCK THE DAY PRIOR TO THE EX DIVIDEND DATE TO COLLECT THE DIVIDEND!

What started out as a small group discussing anything related to investing has grown extremely educational over the last few months.

We have Authors, Financial Advisors, Seasoned investors, Experts in specific fields, and just the average Joe pitching in...

Folks.. we are growing and posters like it. If you are new to investing then this site is for you.

Here is the current link to our BLOG CHAPTER !http://seekingalpha.com/instablog/5038891-interesting-times/2342802-interesting-times-for-all-commodities-and-investments-chapter-37

The chapters continue to advance so this may not be the latest one. Please just look at the bottom of the chapter for the next link !!

As of now we have a small group of investors nervously playing a game. It is ONLY a game but as I have learned that if it is a competition and we do keep standings people take it seriously. I am happy to see this as I am learning while I lose money ( fiat of course, or monopoly money ) lol

But as we progress we are changing rules to make it fairer and more competitive. I have been received messages from all with your ideas and it is your game as well. So please feel free to add whatever thoughts you have. I hope over time other will join as we are still at the beginning stages.

I urge all to post on other articles and blogs what you like about our chapters and challenge in hopes others will either follow or join in the conversation. So keep posting when you trade why you trade for all to see the reasoning. Good luck to all !!

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

I think we had this discussion and even moved it to 2am to help the people on the west coast. Then someone brought up a reason why this wasn't a good idea.

I just don't remember who or why... But I am open to changing the time.. Should we go back to the 2am time ?

I do remember the discussion about the futures. So I would like to stop that advantage. Open to whatever time suggested....I know it's a game but we should have rules as well...

I am thinking as I am typing so as of now if no one complains I am going back to the old rule. THAT YOU HAVE UP TO 2AM EASTERN TIME TO ANNOUNCE YOUR TRADE FOR THE NEXT DAY'S OPENING PRICE.. This will start as of Monday of next week to give everyone time to read this.. So essentially on Saturday at 2am ALL trades for Monday morning must be in print!!

Any objections or agreements please just post agree or disagree. If you disagree please explain why.

    Thanks!!

Sorry if I confused things with two different posts.
I meant to have all of the cash go towards purchasing shares of (CLM) not just 4500 shares. With a total of 58,692.22 cash I think that works out to 8231 whole shares? I am not interested in getting into the minute fractions of shares. Whole shares are fine and the rest can sit in cash till there is enough for more whole shares.

Also cell G468 is incorrect it is adding =SUM(G441:G444) when it should be =SUM(G441:G446). I didn't know if I was allowed to make corrections or not so I haven't touched it????

I am trying to make it simple to do my account. Essentially it is just collecting the dividend once a month on (CLM) and reinvesting the cash into more shares till the end of the challenge. It will just be an experiment in compounding.

Thanks for the effort you guys have put in on the spreadsheet!

Author’s reply » Fed statement a good excuse to take profits

Check that. Far from little-changed, traders use some real or imagined hint from the Fed statement to take a break from buying low and selling high, with the S&P 500 (SPY -0.7%) diving nearly 1% in a matter of minutes.

Perhaps at work here - and we're grasping at straws - is the removal from the statement of a line expressing concern about tightening financial conditions.

Thoughts on how the has an effect on our portfolios??

(QTWW) got downgraded to neutral this morning, but jessss. I actually owned this for real, but I sold my real world holdings early this morning. As a result, I ended up with a net profit. Alas, that is not allowed in our game, so I have now soundly reclaimed my king of the bottom position.

The question now is will QTWW recover some of the loss tomorrow, or will it continue to drop? This is a tough call. If you look at todays chart, it leveled off from 2 to 3:30. But than there was another big sell at around 3:45 that dropped it down another .50. It recovered half of that almost immediately, but I see it's a bit down in the aftermarket.

I still have the oil play on the drawing board, so I am going to preserve capital for that. At the open tomorrow please sell all shares of (QTWW).

Yay! Off work for a week!

Thanks for jinxing me, IT. :)

"Maybe a good overall Mutual Fund is a better way to go?"

I think my fund's done well so far, but we're only three months in. I don't even think I would have picked vtsmx, but I wanted the challenge to match my best 401k option available and what I'm going to do with it. If I recall correctly, Extremebanker's system is similar but more complicated and focuses on a variety of sectors.

Vtsmx is supposed to represent the whole stock market and things have gone well since we started. The question is if the stock market craters, I mean a nasty one not the slight pullbacks we've had, if my moving average strategy of when to go to cash will work to protect most of the principal in the account.

Actually, I would like that to happen before the challenge is over because I'd like to know if this strategy can deal with something worse than summer 2011 before I have too much money in my 401k. (sorry to you older and richer folks, but I'd rather it happen now than later)

After a few years of research and experimenting, including 1997 when I literally put my birthday money in the weirdest stock symbol I could find in the newspaper and doubled it in a year (my second pick was yahoo, oh well - would have turned a 1000% profit in a year or two), I have come to the conclusion that I'm not a good common stock picker.

I think I'm pretty good figuring out if a preferred stock is a good deal and fairly safe. I think I'm pretty good at figuring out if a fund like a cef is a good deal. So I'll stick with those for my taxable account. If the taxable account ever accrues income taxes on me enough that I get annoyed, then I'll know I'm doing something right.

Kind of off-topic, but, just ran some health insurance numbers for our family, and thought I'd share....

Our (health) insurance (through my wife's employer) went up 18.8% this year. On the bright side, total insurance costs (health, dental, various life, etc.) only increased 11.47%.

The old cost for health insurance was $540/month (that is not including employer portion). The new cost is $642/month.

The plan we have now is BC/BS, and has a $2500 max out-of-pocket per family member. It's a PPO.

From what I can decipher from the healthcare.gov site, a comparable Obamacare plan for our family would either be $985/month or $1054/month (they are slim on plan details, and I could not differentiate between the two). The only thing I could tell for sure is that the Obamacare plan was "80/20". They did not list deductibles.

To put that somewhat in perspective, our monthly mortgage payment on our primary residence (which includes principal, interest, property tax, and homeowner's insurance) is $1072/month.

We do not qualify for a subsidy (food stamps, either - I checked).

WTF is wrong with this country? I almost want me and my wife to stop working so we can go on the Obamadole.

More on-topic, I'm looking at (ADM) and (MON) now, and will be tracking them for a potential future purchase.

k, thx. That has been my venting for this week. I appreciate the time you took to read it. ;)

You got a basic estimate from estimated income and zip code, without going through an actual application, right?

If you did a real application, you would be way more angry. I think you are right that a marketplace plan would be about 2x what you have been paying. That's about what I've been hearing.

It's going to backfire with people loosing their insurance and not being able to afford the "Affordable Marketplace" insurance that will cost twice as much.

Here is a link that I posted for USER that was scary. But , of course, most just don't believe it. O CARE is possibly going to rip this country apart. As more try to sign up for what was told was "less money" they will go berserk. Just like you have.

How they can say this with a straight face is amazing...People need insurance so they will be forced to give up other items that will eventually hurt corp. bottom lines.

I have been yelling this from the roof !

    John,

Yes, that was just by state / county. It makes me nervous, because from what my wife said, their HR seems to think ongoing company-provided HI is potentially on the chopping block. Will they raise her pay in response to not providing insurance? I highly doubt it.

Personally I believe they need to cap the costs, and stop worrying about the insurance. I have referenced my son's $95k 6-day hospital stay on SA many times. It was ludicrous.

It's been interesting to read. I tried to go to the website out of curiosity. It required my SSN to set up an account, just to let me look. I didn't go any further. (Luckily I have insurance that's not effected.)

But what kind of situation does this prevent? It seems like the same thing, to let open prices be available until opening. But it's more realistic. What am I missing?

Author’s reply » Actually this was an old rule. Once it was pointed out that some were using the futures market a few stopped playing.

I am trying to make this fair for people that work, as well as for those who retire.. I bet once you start making trades you will understand why.

No disrespect here intended. But the person NOT doing ANY trading is the most vocal on the change. Why is that !

actually, it is MY responsibility for the rules as I have received NUMEROUS PM'S stating exactly what FEAR wrote. So I wrote an executive order...( felt like BO for a moment).. lol

"No disrespect here intended. But the person NOT doing ANY trading is the most vocal on the change. Why is that !"

That's irrelevant. I happen to notice something on a day when I was looking, so I commented on it. Nothing special about it.

The rule doesn't make sense to me. I don't care in the end what it is. But futures ARE part of how one decides which day to buy into a stock for traders. So let's focus on why this is better or not. However, at this point, I'm dropping it. I don't care enough to spend energy on it. It's just that old rule or new, I'm missing why it's in place and think everyone would have the same issue with it. For opening price, it'd make sense to have until opening. Nothing complicated about that. For closing price, you have till close. The trouble was when you had multiple hours after close to use closing price, therefore multiple hours of new info. But there is nothing about using PRE-opening info to get opening prices, that's "unfair." So this rule of choosing by 2am for the next morning's opening, makes no sense to me. If it's that people getting ready for work are at a disadvantage of looking at that PRE-opening info in the morning -- then it makes sense to me. Is that your answer???? That's all I wanted to know & it's what I asked!!

So with that -- I'll just leave at that.

It is relevant to some who are participating. Even FEAR brought up the issue and he is a Financial Advisor. Most are making trades, doing sales, and trying things out and are fine with this..

YOU answered your own question anyway ! I am trying to keep everyone happy. Obviously you don't care for the rule. You are entitled to your opinion . But why knock a rule when you aren't playing anyway? I just don't get it..

Some one else who has a concern who is trading should have brought this up as well. They did not. So lets move on !!

However if anyone else has an objection please let me know. I asked this before and got zippo objections. It was posted for almost a week prior for discussion.

This challenge isn't perfect. But I try to make it as fair as I can. Always open to suggestions just like FEAR presented..

I am playing and I explained to you in PM my current situation. That doesn't mean it will never matter to me.

Why make this into a heated discussion?? A rule didn't make sense to me. I noted it and asked for explanation. This is bad? I didn't "guess right." I repeated what you had buried in your answer, to see if that was the explanation. No conflict needed here. Just a genial explanation.

    My last response on this.

    1) My answer wasn't buried. It was clear as day
    2) FEAR brought up the concern
    3) Trying to be fair to all
    4) ASKED for opinions or objections and got none.
    5) Try to understand it's a game. All have the same rules.
    6) Looking forward to the day you can join us..
    7) Wish i could keep all happy but that is impossible..

    Now lets move on!!

    The original problem was this:

We used to get the day's closing price all the way up to market open the following day. When earnings were released after-hours, people were able to trade on that info. using that day's closing price.

Unsure what the advantage is to not allowing trades up to the open, provided you get the open price, and not previous day's closing price. But, it's a loose simulation, so w/e - we all are burdened by the same limitations, which makes it fair.

Maybe FEAR would not mind commenting on this as well. My concern are the folks who head out the door at 7 AM for work. Then something happens right before the open..

But I see your point and am open to whatever the group wants...

Lets hope some participants post their feelings...

I think the closer the simulation is to real world conditions, the more accurate the experiments we can conduct. I see no problem with allowing people to buy or sell right up to the open. Futures are available in the real world. But if all you had to do to make money was copy the Futures direction, than everyone would be doing it. It's not that easy. Futures have so little volume that they are usually not predictive.

While we are on the subject of changes, I would like to see stops allowed. When you make a purchase, allow the participant to declare a stop in DOLLARS. Something like this:

Buy 5,000 shares of XYZ at the opening price. Place a stop at $23.

Just like with dividends, it would be the participants responsible to declare the stop to the people running the Sim that their stop was initiated. I don't see that being any more demanding that the dividend declaration that people have to make when their stock goes Ex. I believe the addition of stop capability would greatly improve the fidelity of the simulation.

If you just let people put a stop on when they purchase the stock, it's not a lot of work. It could become a lot of work if you let people change the stop position during ownership. So you don't allow that.

I think people will get the most out of the simulation the closer it is to the real world.

That said, I am not going to be insulted if my suggestions are rejected or ignored. I will just work within the rules as specified by our host. I don't think the rules are all that bad. Lets just get on with it.

JBT's comment is the reason the original rules were set and some did gain an unfair advantage . I simply reminded IT of the 2 AM rule .. That said , I agree with the majority and don't see a problem with simulating what takes place in the real world.. Enter trades all the way up to the "open" and trades to sell @ close..

Sorry for the initial confusion it created ;)

Fine w/me, but this one should be on the trader's shoulders to report a stop was triggered. Would require watching a daily chart closely to be accurate, because what if the stop is triggered, yet then the stock price roller coasters back up? Would everyone 'fess up to that? Would anyone even know?

It's easy enough to handle... :) Can just put a notation next to purchases (similar to "buy @ open 11/7"). I, and I'm sure F&G, too, will not be checking your charts all day to see if you get stopped out, however. ;) It would have to be the responsibility of those who decide to use them to notify of a triggered stop.

agree to all that has been said.. if the group wants to employ stops we can work with it..

    JBT,
i think we can set up a formatting so that once the stop is triggered the price would be highlighted, however your point about going thru the stop and rebounding would be a problem ..as it would only stay highlighted if the price remained above or below the stop.. so we will have to rely on others to check that during day.
we can give it a try..

    Focal,

Was that a letter saying "sorry, we're cancelling now" or was it a "your policy will no longer be available at the end of the year" type of thing? I ask because my letter was the latter and I'm wondering if I'm included in the 5% getting cancelled or if it was a flat first type of scenario that's included.

My saga continues on healthcare.gov. I still get the white page of death when I try to view the eligibility page. I only got logged out once this afternoon. I found the equivalent of my old insurance plan by the same company listed under the silver plan - more than four times as much for the premiums.

Woman says that her state plan may now allow domestic-partners and her rates haven't really changed, so I'm holding hope that somehow I can get on her plan...

edit - I'm seriously thinking about lying about my tobacco use as I seem to be able to revise that just to see what happens.

This is followed by 13 pages of information in various print sizes...

My opinion is that if you announce it during trading hours then you can do it at the end of the day. No need to wait until the morning.

At the close yesterday, dust was 35.34. Just now, saw that you are allowing stops....that hurts because I would have set a stop a long time ago on my (DUST). Would it be okay if you would give me the closing price yesterday to sell (DUST) and put it all into (NUGT) at the close price yesterday of 40.46?

This is why I found it so hard to play my dust/nugt positions. The prices move fast, and the best times to sell are during the day, when the volume is up. Normally I see the price of gold rally around 1 or 2 pm. Both dust/nugt are heavily traded by day traders. This is why you see the price decline before the daily 4 pm close of the market (eastern time) as most get out before the close.
They don't like to hold anything for very long. What they miss out on are the big gains, because of this. Dust/nugt has been in a very tight trading range following the trading range of gold. Gold has been trading between about 1350 and 1260......so you can make money both ways.

I bought (NUGT) last week, and didn't sell as it went down with the price of gold. Now you will see gold rally for the rest of the week, possibly into next week. On Friday, I will have to decide whether to hold or sell.

I buy dust/nugt in the pre-market, during the day, and in the after market. This is how I've made some real money. Yes I will be paying taxes on those short term gains, but it's still worth it.

It is now 6:57 am. If there are objections, then just give me the open price for this trade.

Glad you are now allowing stops.

Thank you F&G! I was running to the computer to post that if somebody objects, I'll take the closing prices of today (the 13th of Nov.) to swap dust for nugt.

It's been amazing watching the price support for gold & especially nugt for the last 4 trading days.

IT, I posted a question below....what do you think about putting in orders to sell if a target price is reached? Us "day traders" have a tough time using only open/close/stop loss prices.

We can check the prices of anything thru out the day, which makes the game more like real life. Both yahoo.com & cnbc.com have one day graphs of each stock/etf etc. so you can say "selling (NUGT) if it reaches X amount" would be easy to prove that it did reach that price.

    Thoughts?

Honestly, it would really be up to FEAR and JBT... They handle all the work and I, myself really don't want to add to their workload.

In the beginning I wanted to make this just a simple exercise for those who never invested on their own before. It now seems to be growing into a Charles Schwab sort of thing..

It really isn't up to me.. Those 2 do all the work. I would hate to lose that.

    IT,
I believe JBT laid out the rules , you can set stops to protect the downside and set a stop on the upside to lock in a gain.

Stops should be set either before market opens and after market closes.. as JBT mentioned moving stops around during the day would be unmanageable..

Fear does 90% of the work. If anything, I would defer to him as to what should / should not be permitted, as far as tracking on the spreadsheet goes.

OK goldbugs, it was fun watching gold make a spectacular comeback today. Gold closed at 2 pm ET, on CNBC.com they called it $1286 (Dec. '13 price) so over all, not bad from the previous close of $1268.40. After 2 pm gold fell a bit, but seems to be showing support around $1285. IMO gold will continue to rally tomorrow....cuz baby still needs new shoes? Pleez? Pretty pleez? Nobody knows for sure.

    here's a link http://cnb.cx/1guRilu

Now that we have stops, could we also have tops? If gold rallies tomorrow, in the real market I'm watching every second with my finger ready to hit the sell button. Normally I start selling between say 11 am and 2 pm, trying to be out before everyone starts dumping it. The day traders make it very tough to hold anything for long.....those guys are in & out of the market all day long. Not me, I'm a little more patient. But don't like to hold things over the weekend.

So kids right now I'm watching (NUGT) to see if it goes any higher this afternoon, up until 4 pm. If I see gold on an uptrend, then I would hold until tomorrow.

    BSF,

I believe that was already discussed and allowed. Focal has already done a trade that had both a bottom and a top limit.

Once again, up to the person who sets to report (honestly) if a stop is triggered.

Thanks JohnBinTN, that will make it easier for me to get out of the trade tomorrow. So when do I have to post it? Before open, after open?

Some think gold will continue to rally beyond Friday. I say take some off the table, just in case.

I'm learning more about how to manage the nugt/dust trade. You can have a core position, say in (NUGT) that you don't sell until you have to. Then continue to buy/sell nugt/dust around the price of gold, to make money. In real life, I have had some losses. But overall, I'm up on this trade. It is dangerous, because so many people are playing it. "Gotta know when to hold 'em, & when to fold 'em"....another great song.

Would you believe I hate casinos & never gamble in real life? lol, it's true! Never buy lottery tickets either.... ; )

It's when you think you've got "THE system", and will surely pick the right exit is usually when the rug is pulled from underneath your feet. Be careful.

I think the consensus was same rules as for trades. After close / prior to open. I do not think tinkering with set stops is okay during trading hours - too much to micro manage for this simulation.

thanks JohnBinTN, I'll post before the open then.

you are so right about thinking you have a "system" and then seeing it fall apart.

in real life, I like to buy the great companies at good prices, then hold - for as long as it's smart to hold. Like 20, 30 years or more.

I am on record saying that when gold breaks below $1300 bucks it won't stay there that long.. No , I do not have any charts to support this. Just my impression watching the price for over a year.
