I could put on this bio my education, work experience, investment strategy, and a nice thin (if I can find one) picture of me in a suit looking *smart*. Sorry but that's not my intent here. Sure I invest, help family make financial decisions, and make a ton of mistakes along the way. But my time... More

Interesting Times For All Commodities And Investments!! CHAPTER 4......
  • Interesting Times For All Commodities And Investments!! PORTFOLIO #10.......  140 comments
    Nov 14, 2013 11:23 PM

THIS CHAPTER IS FOR POSTINGS FOR THE PORTFOLIO CHALLENGE ONLY !!

SO THAT ALL UNDERSTAND ANY POST FOR TRADES MADE DURING TRADING HOURS THE CLOSING PRICE OF THAT DAY IS USED. IMPORTANT CHANGE,,,,,,IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS EXPERIENCE MORE LIFE LIKE WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE ORIGINAL RULE THAT YOU HAVE UP TO THE MARKET OPEN TO GET THAT DAYS OPENING PRICE..

FOCAL WANTED US TO HAVE STOPS DURING THE DAY. BLUESKYFOREVER ALSO MADE A SUGGESTION. ACTUALLY I THINK THEY WERE DEMANDS. SO WE EVOLVED AND BECAME MORE COMPETITIVE AS THE RULES GET MODIFIED WEEKLY..

MY POOR TWO MAN IT DEPARTMENT HANDLES IT WAY BETTER THEN THE ACA WEBSITE..

YOU MUST OWN A STOCK THE DAY PRIOR TO THE EX DIVIDEND DATE TO COLLECT THE DIVIDEND!

What started out as a small group discussing anything related to investing has grown extremely educational over the last few months.

We have Authors, Financial Advisors, Seasoned investors, Experts in specific fields, and just the average Joe pitching in...

Folks.. we are growing and posters like it. If you are new to investing then this site is for you.

Here is the current link to our BLOG CHAPTER !http://seekingalpha.com/instablog/5038891-interesting-times/2342802-interesting-times-for-all-commodities-and-investments-chapter-37

The chapters continue to advance so this may not be the latest one. Please just look at the bottom of the chapter for the next link !!

As of now we have a small group of investors nervously playing a game. It is ONLY a game but as I have learned that if it is a competition and we do keep standings people take it seriously. I am happy to see this as I am learning while I lose money ( fiat of course, or monopoly money ) lol

But as we progress we are changing rules to make it fairer and more competitive. I have been received messages from all with your ideas and it is your game as well. So please feel free to add whatever thoughts you have. I hope over time other will join as we are still at the beginning stages.

I urge all to post on other articles and blogs what you like about our chapters and challenge in hopes others will either follow or join in the conversation. So keep posting when you trade why you trade for all to see the reasoning. Good luck to all !!

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

    yeah riiiiight haha

So here's the plan: sell 112 shares of (NUGT) at 45
    sell 112 shares at 46
    sell another 112 at 47
sell the remainder if it hits 50 (that's 110.03 shares)

thank you to JohnBinTN & F&G. I'll post again when they hit (if they do!).

Take off all previous stops on (NUGT).

Today & tomorrow will watch what happens with (NUGT)....

If (NUGT) gets to 47 today, sell 112.

You can make money on (NUGT) & (DUST) but it requires being much more nimble than our portfolio challenge allows.

Jobs number coming out on Thursday but Dec. taper worry is not on the table. DOW 16,000 is possible today.

This isn't good. I'm back up to third place. If the game allowed it, I would suggest all short if I hit first place or at least convert to cash. (Based on what happened at the beginning of the game)

I know what you're saying. :) Like, if (big if), I sell anything, immediately buy it hand over fist, because it is virtually guaranteed to go up a lot in short order. :)

It has happened to me too many times. :(

That is a Law of the Universe that states as soon as you sell, the damn thing will turn around and go up.

The reverse is also true: the Universe is watching for you jump in with your big purchase before allowing the price to fall.

I imagine it would go up sharply after the sale, then drop precipitously so you regret not selling all of it.

Now what were we talking about that as soon as we sell something it will shoot up?

(PSEC) did just that by 10 cents today. Of course I sold all my shares yesterday gambling that gold would have a nice little rebound.

As of now I am licking my wounds. Glad this is monopoly money. Had I stayed the course I would be doing just fine today. But noooo , I had to take a gamble.. Now I am stuck awaiting some war.

    lol

See, but that's the thing - it's monopoly money! I sold psec for real about the turn of the month. Hopefully down the road I can buy it back below $11, but who knows. I made a nice profit and collected dividends for about ten months, but it may very well go up in price a good bit more....

I posted a response yesterday in chapt 38 about one of the PR bank preferreds I have - it went up 10% in one day. Don't know if it was my post or not, but going up that much in one day with less than a thousand shares traded and no new catalyst gets me to thinking. Do I sell? I could make a year's worth of dividends in one day. Do I keep it? It could go up more in price or very well go down below where I bought it.

A bull market makes me a genius. A bear market makes me an idiot. I initially bought it because of a somewhat safe 8-9% yield. I could sell it for an immediate 10% gain. Or it may go up another 25%. Or it may drop 30%. The monthly divvy is nice, so I'll keep it but set a limit order in for a good gain closer to the 52 week high.

And what is more hilarious is that the price just dropped 10% just a few minutes ago while writing this! Which I still believe in this stock enough to buy, but have no money to do so right now.

"I could make a year's worth of dividends in one day."

Maybe FEAR or TACK could answer this more professionally. However in my world if I make a 10% profit I either sell all the shares or just the profit portion and invest in something else..

I would have sold making 10% in a day !

    My 2 cents..

Yeah, always - until I learned the trick. Gamble with the indian's money only. Play until there are no redeemable tickets left on the machine, and pocket whatever you cash out.

    IT,

I never have a problem with booking a profit.. So it just depends on how each individual has set up their game plan....What works for some doesn't work for others..

I have watched Krustyman make great calls on short term trades- he has a knack for good timing ... With "real" money , I don't trade "in and Out " , If i get a quick pop in a stock , i may then sell a call against that position , it then adds a bit more to the gain and I lock in a nice price.. However if i truly have set up the position as LT , then i just sit back & watch... One example is (JPM), with today's move i have a quick 10% on the shares i just added , but it's a LT hold for me as it pays 3% div and I believe it will raise that again next year.. Also , my target is 65 /share sometime in '14 ..

    IT,

"Curious how you would play that trade..."

That's the thing - I bought that with the intention of it being a long term investment, not a trade. I still think of it that way, even if I had a short window to make a decent profit. And then I would have to figure out if I could find something else that would be a better buy at this point in time after selling.

If it was a Cef, I would have already have a limit order in for a 10% gain. Preferreds I think more of as a "buy it and forget it" type of deal. Except the one I'm referring to was bought at what is an abnormally large discount to par (for preferreds currently available). But if things work out kind-of-sort-of like last year, I may be able to sell it for a 25% gain later in the spring while having collected a few months worth of dividends.

    F&G,

"However if i truly have set up the position as LT , then i just sit back & watch... One example is (JPM), with today's move i have a quick 10% on the shares i just added , but it's a LT hold for me as it pays 3% div and I believe it will raise that again next year.."

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks like this, even if I was so very tempted! And of course, having said that, everything will go to boo-boo over the next year. Which since I'm poor, I will be buying as much as possible so hopefully things will work out over time...

Looking to take some profits? U.S. shares look relatively expensive, says Barron's

As the taper approaches, it may be time to ring the register and book some gains, Barron's thinks. Add in the fact that the S&P's 26% YTD gain has "likely [left] many investors with a higher mix of stocks than they would prefer," and the issues isn't whether or not to sell, but rather "what to sell and where to put the cash."

Food for thought from Jack Hough: "The S&P 500 trades above 17 times trailing earnings, versus a historical average of about 15 [and] U.S. shares are 57% more expensive than emerging markets and 67% more expensive than Europe" based on "a long-term average of earnings to adjust for cyclicality."

Investors might want to consider putting small companies on the chopping block first, as they have outperformed their larger cap counterparts this year and their P/E premium to large caps has stretched well beyond its historical average.

    "As the taper approaches"..????
Why are they certain taper is approaching??

Author’s reply » "Investor behavior: Same as it ever was"

The financial crisis changed nothing, writes Vanguard's Fran Kinniry: Investors continue to chase returns, and have lately been jettisoning fixed income for stocks. Driven by the 4th greatest bull market on record - a cumulative return of 198% since the bottom - global equity allocation for investors has increased to 57% from 38%, and vs. the 20-year median of 51%.

It's probably time for the typical investor (one with an equity-heavy portfolio) to maintain a prudent allocation by directing new cash flows into bonds, while selling stocks - the exact opposite of where money is flowing today.

"Rebalancing usually seems counterintuitive at the time when it promises to be most effective," says Finniry. "It can be difficult to implement from a behavioral standpoint and requires incredible discipline." With equities partying and the near-universal belief of higher interest rates on the way, who could blame an investor for not wanting to sell stocks and buy bonds.

"It is very common following significant gains in the equity markets for investors to question the benefits of rebalancing," but it's never "different this time;" instead it's the "same as it ever was."

    Interesting !!!

Can I use $31 as my stop loss? If gold goes back to $32 (around lunch time, between noon & 1 pm gold usually is at it's highest) can I get that higher price? The pain has to stop sometime, lol.

Should have just stayed in dust....that's going up now, as gold becomes less attractive due to the economic upturn that should continue to gather steam.

So much volatility in the gold market, but any upticks are not going to last. Watch next year as gold will settle closer to $1000 or less.

Never bet the farm on the gold trade!

    Blue ,

i believe we set the rule that stops cant be entered during the trading day , only when market is closed effective for the next session..

it becomes too much to try and handle and keep track of during the trading day..

if anyone believes that I am incorrect with that , please let me know

    thanks

ok, sell all (NUGT) at whatever price. I wanted to post before the open, when the price was at $32.07. However, by the time I got the post done after the open, gold was already down to just above $31.

    Thanks....either way I lose big.

wait, hold off. gold got as high as 1244 today. Since I have to use the closing price, or the open price, or post before the open a stop let me decide what to do 1 minute before the close today.

gold is bouncing higher, so I'll keep (NUGT).

Just today, you could have made $ in both (DUST) and (NUGT).

Part of the problem with the volatility is all the day traders doing just that. The power of the gold bugs is strong!

Much wiser to just buy quality companies with good dividends and hold them forever.

How could you have made money both ways today? You'd have to - randomly- guess which way it was headed at any given time? Are there any indicators you're using? (Such as when stocks are going up, NUGT has more chance of it...)

Gold or at least Gold miners was set to bounce a bit back. The news keeps pushing things in different than expect-able directions the last week or so.

LOMAH, what these day traders do is buy positions in both nugt & dust. Then they sit with a finger on the sell button, waiting for the price to go up. They could set stop losses too. During the day, the price fluctuations on nugt & dust make it possible to make money on both.

Some take profits of 50 cents.

Hum, seems like it would work well. Set up to buy each, at the same time set up stop losses for each. Then let the one that's climbing (didn't trigger the stop), go for a bit and set a new trailing stop. ...have you done it? worked? Seems so easy, but that can't be right :).

Biggest complication is speed at getting all of that set up before a big swing by one or the other.

At the close, 11/27, I would like to sell all shares held in (KO). Keeping this in my real-life portfolio, probably forever, though. I guess they're having a hard time dealing with the decline in soda purchases, or something. I'm confident they'll figure everything out at some point in the future.

With all cash on hand, at the 11/27 close, I would like to purchase (PM). Also a long-term hold in my real-life portfolio. It has taken a real beatdown because of their earnings outlook. The punishment was a bit overdone, as usual, in my opinion. People gonna smoke, that's just a fact. They are calling 2014 "an investment year". Hopefully they invest wisely.

I share your pain JBT, (KO) must be my worst performer. It's the no sugar/low carb diet. (KO) needs to formulate some low calorie, healthy snacks & drinks. Like water & raw veggies?? haha. Have to admit, I don't even drink diet coke anymore ; (

Same thing with (GIS) (KRFT) etc. Low carb/**paleo** diet is killing these food companies. They need to reformulate to no sugar/low sugar, more bran, fiber, & whole grains. The only cereal I eat is Fiber One. More fiber you eat, more weight you lose while feeling full. One of my friends lost over 100 pounds by eating healthy & 40 grams of fiber a day.

We didn't hardly eat the pies this year. Dogs loving it tho.

    IT,

That's good to hear. 90% of the silver I own has a price basis of 'zero', or face value at most. I was a "collector" when I was much, much younger, and most of what I have is just from change received, or coins begged / gifted from family, etc.

Gold is a rich man's game - not for me.

    Avi says, ...

    http://seekingalpha.co...

... that gold could go down, but if it doesn't go down, it could go up: For the time being, I will believe this part of what he says about golds direction:

". . . we are now within a region above 115, (GLD) mentioned last week, which can serve as support to spark an intermediate term rally within the next two weeks. And, this is starting to look more and more likely with each passing day."

For that reason, I will add to my (SLW).

Up even more today. I think this is a short to intermediate upside move. (GLD) held above 6/28 low of $114.68 - it just got down to $117.23 and is now moving up. Maybe this is the Santa Clause rally.

Maybe "sentiment" will change. Yes, I can feel the sentiment changing.

I had forgotten all about it, to tell the truth. At this point, does the rule get modified, or do portfolios have to be modified to be brought into compliance?

I'll have to have a word with our oversight committee the next time they meet... ;)

    Where's IT?

You can have multiple entries for the same stock, but I think originally we weren't supposed to own more than 10 different stocks.

"Bullard: Taper would "recognize" labor improvement

The chances of the taper have increased thanks to the recent labor market data, says St. Louis Fed chief Jim Bullard, but below-target inflation remains an issue. "There is no widely accepted reason why inflation is running as low as it is in the face of extraordinarily accommodative policy from the Fed,” he says. “A small taper might recognize labor market improvement while still providing the Committee the opportunity to carefully monitor inflation during the first half of 2014 ... Should inflation not return toward target, the Committee could pause tapering at subsequent meetings."

Like John Williams last week, Bullard suggests a change in forward guidance may be in order to convince markets the taper and a rate hike are two separate issues.

Treasurys remain little-changed on the session, the 10-year yield off a basis point to 2.85%.

    What's an investor to think?

It will be interesting to see what the "not in labor force" number is when the Fed's unemployment target is met... Should be up to about 75 million on the food stamps roll by then...
