I could put on this bio my education, work experience, investment strategy, and a nice thin (if I can find one) picture of me in a suit looking *smart*. Sorry but that's not my intent here. Sure I invest, help family make financial decisions, and make a ton of mistakes along the way. But my time... More

THIS CHAPTER IS FOR POSTINGS FOR THE PORTFOLIO CHALLENGE ONLY !!

SO THAT ALL UNDERSTAND ANY POST FOR TRADES MADE DURING TRADING HOURS THE CLOSING PRICE OF THAT DAY IS USED. IMPORTANT CHANGE,,,,,,IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS EXPERIENCE MORE LIFE LIKE WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE ORIGINAL RULE THAT YOU HAVE UP TO THE MARKET OPEN TO GET THAT DAYS OPENING PRICE..

FOCAL WANTED US TO HAVE STOPS DURING THE DAY. BLUESKYFOREVER ALSO MADE A SUGGESTION. ACTUALLY I THINK THEY WERE DEMANDS. SO WE EVOLVED AND BECAME MORE COMPETITIVE AS THE RULES GET MODIFIED WEEKLY..

MY POOR TWO MAN IT DEPARTMENT HANDLES IT WAY BETTER THEN THE ACA WEBSITE..

YOU MUST OWN A STOCK THE DAY PRIOR TO THE EX DIVIDEND DATE TO COLLECT THE DIVIDEND!

What started out as a small group discussing anything related to investing has grown extremely educational over the last few months.

We have Authors, Financial Advisors, Seasoned investors, Experts in specific fields, and just the average Joe pitching in...

Folks.. we are growing and posters like it. If you are new to investing then this site is for you.

Here is the current link to our BLOG CHAPTER !http://seekingalpha.com/instablog/5038891-interesting-times/2342802-interesting-times-for-all-commodities-and-investments-chapter-37

The chapters continue to advance so this may not be the latest one. Please just look at the bottom of the chapter for the next link !!

As of now we have a small group of investors nervously playing a game. It is ONLY a game but as I have learned that if it is a competition and we do keep standings people take it seriously. I am happy to see this as I am learning while I lose money ( fiat of course, or monopoly money ) lol

But as we progress we are changing rules to make it fairer and more competitive. I have been received messages from all with your ideas and it is your game as well. So please feel free to add whatever thoughts you have. I hope over time other will join as we are still at the beginning stages.

I urge all to post on other articles and blogs what you like about our chapters and challenge in hopes others will either follow or join in the conversation. So keep posting when you trade why you trade for all to see the reasoning. Good luck to all !!

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

VTSMX announced a distribution of 0.227 per share payable tomorrow. Please reinvest that into the fund plus $2 of my cash - I guess the reinvestment price will be whatever the fund closes at tomorrow like real life?. I will keep 8 cents for buying opportunities. Thanks.

Author’s reply » Chinese shares suffer worst run for 19 years amid cash crunch

Chinese stocks have closed down for the ninth consecutive session, the worst run since 1994, amid increasing fears of another cash crunch in the short-term money markets.

The seven-day repurchase rate soared 100 bps to a six-month high of 7.6%, representing a jump of 328 bps this week.

The spike came as borrowing remained difficult despite the People's Bank of China making an emergency cash injection in the financial system yesterday after being inactive for over two weeks. The PBOC didn't provide too many details, although the amount was reported to be 200B yuan ($32.9B).

"Market participants have to be able to see it and know the quantity and tenor of liquidity assistance in order to be reassured," says HSBC's Pin Ru Tan. "If they do not, it is natural to remain cautious.

The Shanghai composite fell 2% and the Hang Seng -0.2%.

How does this effect the markets if at all?

Author’s reply » Top of the morning to all !! Does this concern anyone?Guess this has no effect on the markets at all?

    Fed holdings sail past $4T

The Federal Reserve's balance sheet has passed $4T for the first time after rising $14.1B this week to $4.01T.

The milestone comes as the central bank plans to scale back its bond-buying program to $75B a month from $85B. Prior to this third round of QE in September 2012, the central bank held $2.82T in assets. Its balance sheet has quadrupled since 2008.

Gives me the creeps !! Sooner or later you have to pay the piper.. ..

    IT,
With all due respect the cries of "paying the piper " have been heard since QE 2 ----- some 400 S & P points ago..

IF and that is a big IF , IMO---- by the time we 'pay the Piper" astute baby boomers will have made a nice stockpile for themselves , and believe it or not that is part of the Fed plan ( the wealth effect) and its working ..

I see it everyday and talk to folks constantly that are feeling very good now about their retirement -- It shouldn't be dismissed .. It;s real ..

I may be wrong. But your comment fits for the rich, yup they are becoming richer. But I just continue to read that many retail investors are on the sidelines..

Paying off this tremendous debt concerns me. But like you said time will tell..

Baby boomers I know aren't singing the blues. In fact they are losing money they need monthly on their bonds. So I guess it is who you talk to.

Why does the debt concern you? The only time I ever even think about it is when it's mentioned on a finance site, or the news.

Serenity Prayer, man. Read it. Live it.

    IT,,
Wont deny the "rich" are getting richer , the saying" money goes to money" is very true.. BUT
to believe its only the ultra rich is totally wrong.. The folks I am referring to were people that worked for 30-35 yrs in the corporate world middle & first level managers ) sent kids to school, etc. don't drive Mercedes, just a nice middle class situation that i am referring to .. The equity market has allowed them be in much better financial shape.. If they are managing their own money or getting help doing it , they should have reduced their bond exposure a long time ago.
Many that i refer to were in the market ot some extent ,and the switch from bonds to the equity market is exactly why they aren't singing the blues.. There is plenty of income alternatives with Div stocks , etc.. And as many more realize that , it can fuel this market higher..

As i mentioned earlier , it may be a long time before we wrangle with the debt issue , look how long its been since we heard the fears of "paying' it back after QE 1 -2 , In the meantime , I believe one has to look at today .. tomorrow just may take care of itself.. AND IF it doesn't THEN one can change and adapt to the environment.....
As JBT says , THE Serenity prayer..

I would agree with your analysis. I also know quite a few who, once they got back their 2009 losses, bailed out of the markets.

But I am sure we have plenty left who didn't..

Knowing that interest rates should stay relatively low for quite some time I feel comfortable adding to my (PSEC). Still feel skiddish about the rest of the markets though.

I can be wrong, and I will have to just live with it ! :(

But my budget only goes so far ....

Hello all. VTSMX's distribution is 0.227 per share. Vanguard lists the reinvestment price as $45.58.

He he... I can't complain, I am up 12k on two back to back plays…
I thought about staying in, but I was not and am still not convinced that gold has bottomed. The last thing I want to do is to get trapped in a 3x short ETF if it takes a dive.

You have been trapped in (NUGT) for sometime now… The question for you is will you stay in (http://bit.ly/Je8v2V) today, or will you take this opportunity to sell at the open giving you back your investing freedom? :)

Let's see if I can make some money out of my mistake to sell my long position in (NUGT) on Dec 31…

I suspect this mornings futures pop on gold is overdone. So I am betting the trading session price for gold will decrease relative to the opening. I am willing to risk around $2k if I am wrong.

At the open, please buy $76k worth of (DUST). I would like a safety stop set at 3% below the opening price of (DUST).

I'd like to join the portfolio challenge to test whether Dr. Bernstein's No Brainer lazy portfolio http://on.mktw.net/1dE... out performs Eddy Elfenbein's five new stocks for 2014 posted at his Crossing Wall Street blog http://bit.ly/1dEBr2B. Please invest the $100,000 at Friday, Jan. 3rd's closing prices.

For the No Brainer portfolio please invest $12,500 in (VBMFX), $12,500 in (VFINX), $12,500 in (VEURX), and $12,500 in (NAESX).

For the individual stock portfolio, please invest $10,000 each in (EBAY), (ESRX), (IBM), (MCD), and (QCOM).

(GPC) declared a dividend for shareholders as of 12/6/2013 of 0.5375 per share, paid 1/2/2014. Altho I sold (GPC) on 12/12/2013 the dividend should still be paid, right? So that's 100 shares = $53.75.

    (SNA) paid a dividend of 0.44 x 100 shares = $44.00 back on 12/10.

    (LMT) paid a dividend of 1.33 x 100 = $133 on 12/27/13.

    (MCD) paid a divi of 0.81 x 100 = $81 back on 12/16/13.

    (CMI) paid a divi of 0.625 x 100 = $62.50 back on 12/2/13

    (LO) paid a divi of 0.55 x 200 = $110 back on 12/10/13

Thanks for all your hard work John & F&G, these dividends are a pain… ; ) Note my new stocks don't pay any dividends, easier for me & you guys!

thanks F&G, wasn't sure if you picked up the latest. You & John are the best!

Looks like yesterday was another "buy" for stocks, as we are set to go higher today. IMO, the jobs report on Friday could be just what the market needs - an "icebreaker" to unlock some upside potential.

If you pick your stocks carefully, looking for those with low PE ratios but set to earn more in 2014, this could be another big year. (AAPL) is going to go up one of these days, I'm going to buy a few more shares if we get another dip. Looking for one of those "gravy days" today ; ) I'll post more later about some stocks that are still getting hotter, despite the chilly weather.

For those who do read my comments, hope you noted that I posted on IT's blog months ago about (GALE) and (AMBA)….2 of my biggest gainers!

F&G, Samsung lost some business (reported today, Samsung's market share is down) so was hoping (AAPL) would be up on that news. It's down $3. Long term, IMO (AAPL) is a winner but we need to see what the next earnings report shows.

I've been watching (GLUU) since noticing it on Krusty's picks. That stock is up big today. So is (YOKU). Nice picks! (BA) continues to go up too.

    Blue,
I believe u know my opinion on AAPL, IMO its 650 sometime this year .. people have already forgotten about the Japan deal with NTTDOCOMO.... that is huge ,, and then there is China mobile .....

Krusty is an excellent investor/trader and it shows.. his pick (YOKU) is in the Chinese internet space,, my choice in that group is (CTRP) , but unfortunately after a good start it suffered the other day from a competitor in that space that had good news. LT i believe its a big winner.. That entire space although speculative has a chance to be huge winners this year..

(BA) is strong and still relatively inexpensive ---
the financials in general are strong.. (BAC) has broken out and looks to be headed higher . they have been so strong that i can see a pull back when they report even if they have blowout earnings.. & that would be a chance to buy or add to positions

Since you are new the rule is you get tomorrows opening price. If you mentioned these stocks PRIOR TO THE CLOSE THEN YOU GET THE CLOSING PRICE...We had a person who was watching the futures and then made his pick AFTER the markets were closed.. I know it is different then daily trading but it's the best we can come up with..

Yuma's high temperature was 117˚ last June 28 and the high temperatures on most days in July are between 106˚-107˚.

No need to announce when you want to hold to. If you decide to sell during the day on Friday you will get Fridays closing price. HOWEVER if you choose to sell AFTER 4pm you will get Mondays opening price..

It sounds confusing in the beginning but you'll get the hang of it ! It will be fun. Try to get more of the breakfast club to play along as well. The more the merrier..

Word on the street has it that your an Financial Advisor and not a Real Estate agent. Yup, Johnny The Pump was caught on tape.

Meanwhile COINS was on the phone all day trying to talk to JP Morgue, and Goldman Sux to find out when they are going to manipulate the metals down again...

    Just sayin...

Nope not a financial advisor, although I'd make a prettttty good one. Most of my real estate advice was prefaced with financial advice, and since I really helped a lot of people realize they couldn't afford to buy a home (because they had no savings & bad credit) I didn't always sell a lot of homes. Except in 2005, when I sold almost $9 million. That was a very good year for my SEP plan.

My dad was an amazing investor. He taught me a lot. Like how to drive the same car for over 20 years, but change the engine when needed. My mom is good at saving too. Both of them grew up during the Depression, so that sort of taught them how to make do with very little. We all started working very young, helping out at the family business. That taught me a lot too, especially about customer service.

My family is mostly German & Swiss German at that. You know, good at not spending money. You would laugh if you ever met me. Recently, I was getting the dogs groomed. There's a guy there that does such a good job, it's worth the almost 40 minute drive to get there. You see, German shepherds are a "special" breed. Most groomers have no idea how to handle them, let alone groom them. Anyhow, I stopped into a nice lunch place that had an antique store & an artist's gallery. So I was admiring the portraits….the artist wasn't there, but the antique owner was answering my questions. When I asked how much he charged, she was giving me the once over (I was dressed for hiking, and likely covered with dog hair to boot). She mentioned that a smaller portrait, done with charcoal, would be less expensive. Haha, once again my first impression was not a that great! ; )

You rich people with dog "groomers", and such.... You dog gets its hair did, while the children starve sine there's not 500 weeks of unemployment anymore. Sad, sad, sad.

John, I only go 4 or less times a year. Most of the time, I wash the dogs. It's their darn nails. If I could clip those, I'd never have to go to the groomer. As it is, I spend more on the dogs then myself! No kidding.

We aren't rich, living off of savings has made my hair go gray & start falling out. Hopefully this year, things will get better for us. If not, I'm selling the house.

If it wasn't for investing results & never spending money, we would have had to sell the house a few years ago, when the market was down. It's still down, and can't say yet what the housing market will be like in our area. We need to see less unemployment around here. NJ is over 8%.

    BSF,

I was joking, btw. We can't clip our dogs nails, either... They get nippy. And nippy from our dogs hurts. :) They get their nails trimmed once/year when they go for their shots. They have dragon lady nails right now...

ugh those nails. Every time they jump on me, it hurts. One dog is about 70 lbs the other one is over 100 so when they do that….ouchie! The female likes to grab people, & then when they jerk their arm away, they get a tiny bite….we don't let that happen, tho. She stays locked up when we have visitors. So it takes a person familiar with these dogs to handle them. They are so well behaved, if you just know what to do. Show any fear….and it's all over! Is it their faulty that they love to chase people when they try to run away?? Really, they just think you're playing with them ; )

Our big one (lab/rott) is also the 'people' person, and wants to meet all the new people - tail's always wagging a mile a minute.

The little one (bear dog) is the guardian. He likes his people family only. Doesn't care for his dog brother much... Mean little sucker, and he's 75 pounds of pure muscle.

The smaller one will submit to nail clippings (not with a smile, though). The big guy - he needs a muzzle and the two big guys at the vet to restrain him for the procedure.

yeah well maybe you will end up the winner, you never know. Deer might end up winning with his (GALE) position, so you are going to have to get better at trading around the price of gold. Maybe Coins can give you some tips.

I am so enjoying finding out all about our Guv and how he punishes the dems for not supporting him. So turns out Hoboken got $300,000 after hurricane Sandy. The whole town was under water.

Nobody talks about it, but the Guv decided we had to have a special election for the senate seat Cory Booker eventually won. That only cost $17 million - and then we voted anyway in November. Nobody really knows why he wasted money on that. The folks in the town just east of us would have loved to get more $ to rebuild after Sandy. Most of the homes in those towns are still gone. No money to rebuild, plus they have to raise the house, which does make sense to me. But these are people that don't have the $ for that, so they had to abandon their homes. It's sad.

I'll be making some sales and purchases at the market open prices of 1/16.

    Sales:

22.2759 shares of (LMT) - this is profit harvesting. Still bullish on (LMT).
All share lots of (CSX) - again, still like (CSX) long-term, I just want to 'get my money and run' to re-deploy for the challenge.
All shares of (TGT) and (WMT) - bad call on my part in the short-term. I'd own both in a long-term portfolio, though. Oh, and thanks (TGT) for that little security breach right after I bought you. I hate you. ;)

Now, with all cash available in my 'bank', and as a result of these sales, I would like to buy the following stocks (dividing all available cash into three equal piles, with even share numbers, rounded down):

    (PSX)
    (CVS)
    (WAG)

I love oil (big oil, olive oil, massage oil...) ;), and I have a feeling 0care might have at least a short-term bump in store for the drug dealers when the sickly who just scored insurance (Medicare, most likely) start feeding at the trough of pharmaceutical bliss... I'll stick with my one producer (PFE), but I want a piece of some of the people that distribute the smack. ;)

Here endeth my trades. God have mercy on my soul. :)

Maybe I'll look at it, but until (WIN) is sold, I'm not adding any additional stocks to the mix.

Also, I'm selling out of Computershare, so my money is more 'liberated'... It's a pain in the butt to buy/sell through them. In addition to (WIN), I'll be looking to sell (PM) and (MO) in the very near future for the same reason...

Then I can be a 'trader'!

RE: OBAMACARE A comment posted on the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare

"I actually made it through this morning at 8:00 AM. I have a preexisting
condition (Type 1 Diabetes) and my income base was 45K-55K annually. I chose
tier 2 "Silver Plan" and my monthly premiums came out to $597.00 with
$13,988 yearly deductible!!! There is NO POSSIBLE way that I can afford this
so I "opt-out" and chose to continue along with no insurance. I received an
email tonight at 5:00 P.M. Informing me that my fine would be $4,037 and
could be attached to my yearly income tax return. Then you make it to the
"REPERCUSSIONS PORTION" for "non-payment" of yearly fine. First, your
drivers license will be suspended until paid, and if you go 24 consecutive
months with "Non-Payment" and you happen to be a home owner, you will have a
federal tax lien placed on your home. You can agree to give your bank
information so that they can easy "Automatically withdraw" your "penalties"
weekly, bi-weekly or monthly! This by no means is "Free" or even
"Affordable." Kinda sheds a lot of light on all of the arming and beefing up
of arms for all of the domestic departments INCLUDING the IRS now doesn't
it? There's a war coming folks...

Interesting Times, "For 2014, the flat fee is $95 per adult and $47.50 per child, up to $285 per family. Or the penalty could be 1% of family income, if that results in a larger fine. (Income is defined as total income above the filing threshold, which is $10,000 for an individual and $20,000 for a family in 2013.) So a person making $50,000 would be subject to a $400 penalty, while a couple earning that amount would each pay $300." http://cnnmon.ie/1eNMbu4

American health care is so expensive and even the healthiest person is exposed to many risks of disease, accidental injury, and criminal attack. One of the teachers I worked with was crossing the road with two friends in December a few years ago. They were hit by a car. Her friends suffered broken legs. She suffered a fatal head injury. In a few seconds, three family's lives were changed forever. The hospital charged bills for emergency treatment for all three accident victims. There is a hospital bill to pay, whether you live or die.

I would advise my adult children -- or anyone else who asked -- to purchase a minimum health care plan rather than pay a penalty. No one can forsee the future.

Interesting Times, Vanguard offers a tool for selecting appropriate mutual funds to match an investor's time horizon and risk tolerance: http://bit.ly/1mAHqty

Vanguard offers a similar tool for selecting appropriate ETFs, since ETF costs are so low: http://bit.ly/1mAHqtz

I'm reading The Man in the Arena: Vanguard Founder John C. Bogle and His Lifelong Battle to Serve Investors First. It's fascinating to learn how Gus Sauter and Jack Bogle developed index funds, and how much the costs investors pay -- to brokerages, hedge fund managers, mutual fund managers, ETF managers, etc. -- reduce the returns our investments earn for us. One interesting caveat Jack Bogle gives is that ETFs may tempt investors to trade too often, which increases their costs and reduces their returns. Like Ulysses in The Odyssey, investors have to bind themselves to a plan to avoid the Sirens' song of frequent trading. http://bit.ly/1mAHqJW
