Stock market up. Gold has a little room to go higher left in it (jump back in NUGT now, especially if it breaks 40). Fed can keep tapering as long as 10 year under 3%.

Longer term Fed can't save this system. Sure, they threw $6 trillion at it along with the $2.4 trillion from U.S. govt. after the last crisis, but one bank in Europe will screw it all up for everyone else (or Citibank here) making 2008 look like a walk in the park. My advice: enjoy the ride, insure for the worst, keep stops.

You have mentioned that if the 1650 was reached a balanced portfolio would not be harmed much...

What does one buy if stocks are dropping 10%. Or is it the dividend the key . It would buy more shares at a cheaper price.

I am taking a shot at my answer..

    Thanks !!

I just meant that a portfolio, balanced between equities, preferreds and bonds, isn't going to drop as much as the SPX, so if that retreated 11% from the highs, I'd expect the portfolio to decline less. Single-digit declines in an otherwise positive market undergoing an overdue correction aren't worthy of getting excited about of making radical changes to allocations.

Now, if selected equities over-correct, then, one can always shift some cash, or money in bonds, to establish new positions, if the values are compelling. The idea, always, is to make "adjustments," not over-allocated bets to one sector or class of security. In the long run this approach pays off much better than oscillating market-timing guesses.

Gold is up 1.8% to $1,262 per ounce and silver 1.9% to $19.49 following the big miss in the ISM report as traders contemplate maybe a slowdown in the taper, and some bulls dream about a QE4. Up 1.5% at the moment the Gold Miners ETF is ahead 12.9% YTD.

The 10-year Treasury yield is off 3 basis points to 2.62% and the December 2016 Eurodollar contract is up 9 basis points to 97.99 - suggesting a slower pace of rate hikes, but still pricing in a Fed Funds rate 175 basis points higher than it is today.

Nothing surprising in any of it:

Gold only moves higher on fear, nothing else.

Auto sales bad in worst weather in 30 years, what a shock!

Yep, support broken; we're going lower, for now.

Tack said, "Gold only moves higher on fear, nothing else."

Not to hash this out like we always do Tack, but since you brought it up I would at least offer the following counter point for others to consider.

    Does gold = fear?

or does gold = debt hedge?

86% correlation shows it's the latter.

    http://bit.ly/1f2BBOK

Up until 2011 it was. http://bit.ly/1l8y6LO

    This can only mean one of two things is occurring;

    1. Debt doesn't matter anymore and gold will flounder

    2. Gold price will catch up to correlation.

(This argument that it will catch up to correlation is not related to the multitude of other reasons to own gold and is to be considered prmia facie).

It's a daily emotional rollercoaster. Look at today's chart, an exact inverse of the SPX. It's not a forecaster of anything. If SPX is up tomorrow, gold will plunge.

One can't invest if one's horizon is hours or days.

Not surprised, especially with exaggerated reaction to today's reports.

Not adding anything this instant, but will add to any issues that drop disproportionately. Also, watching Brazil very closely. very good report today, and the bottom there appears in sight after long, precipitous slide.

If you really think the market is headed lower, then I wouldn't even get interested until we hit $10.50. If it continues towards $10, I might sit out to see if/when it hits a bottom.

The yield helps give it a nice factor of safety though.

This BDC has grown revenues and income substantially over the last three years and has almost always met or exceeded their estimates. Their share price grew accordingly.

Now, in 2014, I see a straight-down plunge in share price without any notable change in their business. Anytime I see radically steep sell-off they attract my attention because they often result in a capitulation, where prices bottom, volume spikes, then share begin a gradual, or even rapid, rebound.

I've read the links, and I just don't see what drives the P/S. It was up around 18 in 2007, then dropped quite a bit.

Anyways, I'm leaning towards a split of 40% into (PSEC), and 60% into (LINE).

I love my dividends, but also want to get at least a decent portion of my capital back, too... :)

There is no "rub." BDC's are investment companies that operate under a specific legal structure, as explained.

You'll have to be more specific in your concerns.

IT...it's cold everywhere! My Duke Power bill just arrived and was 116% higher than my monthly average! Beat my previous record high by 46%.

When you have a heat pump and it's single digits outside you can just see the $$$$$$$$$$$$ streaming out.

We were without power here last night - went out at around 10:30. :( They got it back on at ~2:30 (woke me up as the various things coming back on make a bit of noise).

Probably from the ice - the trees and power lines are all white, and have icicles hanging on 'em. Schools are all closed.

This is not ideal for Tennessee... The houses are not built for this weather (mechanicals in the attic, etc.) And people down here can't drive in it!! No salt trucks (maybe in Memphis, not sure), and if they do anything, they sand the streets, which does basically nothing.

    Can't wait for Spring.

It's impossible to answer that question definitively. We could go lower, and at any moment could reverse and go higher.

The best course is not to guess about direction for a day, a week or even a month, but decide if an issue seems like a good value, based on some analysis, and, if so, buy at least some. There is no magic formula.

Now for those that don't wish to click on the links , in those articles I call for the possibility of S & P 1550-1560 , so your foolish comment of not liking anyone that says the market can go down is absurd..

The spreadsheet was pulled because IT owes JBT an apology,
    Plain & Simple .....

The spreadsheet was created for use here ,but was not intended fro others to abuse those that created and put the effort into it ,,,,

I will now ask JBT to not use the spreadsheet here , it will be his decision if he wishes to stay here on this blog..

I questioned the "contrarian" investor as I highlighted his market calls here in another article

Look at the dates and the calls that were made and tell me why that shouldn't be questioned

So here is a list of his commentary for u to consume ...
From Feb '13 where he states we have completed a top (I'll note S & P was at 1487 !!)
    http://bit.ly/1fi8ZV8

From March'13 the first warning of a bust and $50 S & P earnings prediction
    http://bit.ly/1fi8Xg6

From April , warning of a selloff
    http://bit.ly/1fi8Xg8

A comment back in July '13 , as he warned us to get out ...
    http://bit.ly/1fi8Xwo

here's a call by contrarian as he debated me back in oct '13 and predicted sub $50 earnings for the S & P again I can give u all sorts of links to show S & p earnings in '14 will be around $120 .. not to mention they didn't crater in '13 as predicted..
    http://bit.ly/1fi8ZVg

Only a fool would not question that ... and U decided to take his side ,, that says it all...

Each to his own,,, those are the simple facts and they are undisputed.. the record clearly shows that

I don't care how much you know because you care so little for people. I wouldn't want any family member or friend of mine to ever do business with someone like that. I just lost my mom not to long ago. Before Fear picked up and left. I sent him and a few others an apology today as I said things out of line.

LOMAH can tell you I did, since I sent her , BSF, and Fear one. I admitted I was probably too abrupt with some responses.

However Fear just wants to keep calling us names, even thinks JBT would follow him out the door on his orders.

JBT is a very smart person who can think for himself. I did apologize to JBT FIRST !! Like a man he accepted it and we have moved on.

Actually (lol, hate to say anything), F&G was unnecessarily provoked in a reply to Tack in this message thread. I remember reading it when it first showed up and asking to myself "Why?"...

SA has some head-strong individuals on both sides of anything that comes up for discussion. I myself often find it entertaining, but sometimes there ends up being hard feelings on one side or another (or both).

When my parents were alive, if you asked either one of them what they wanted, their typical response would be "Peace in the valley". As I've grown older, I've come to understand what they meant. :)

That being said, it's F&G's spreadsheet - he made it, and he maintained it 99% of the time. If he so requests, I will remove it.

    @JBT, & everyone

"SA has some head-strong individuals on both sides of anything that comes up for discussion."

    --
Goodness that's true. I've been constantly surprised. It's like the words are money, not merely opinions (not yet proven right or wrong when there about the future.)
    --
I really wish everyone would find a way to live and share together. It's why I started the blog. I liked this one, and had a sense this time was different (even though I didn't know yet IT's mom had passed away.) I'd really like to see everyone posting in the same place sharing ideas.
    --
I've seen everyone get provoked. Then exchanges get heated. I've also seen claims of provoked, when the same thing read with a cooler head... & it would look like just an opinion and not an attack. So if there is a way to take the words less seriously...or communicate and clear them up...

This is the kind of remark I find provoking. It's an attack, saying someone is wrong, & not a man about it. Even if that's what you feel & even when you are right!, it's not effective to say negative things about someone in a public place. All can do is lead to escalation.
    --
I know you're very frustrated... but give everyone some time... You always take a few days after an outburst to realize you've had one of those (tough pain) nights... others need time too to process and decide what they think.
    ---
Along the same lines, Fear called for apology in the blog to JBT. You may have apologized, but you didn't do that in the blog... so none of us "watching" had any idea. (I don't know if Fear did.) But it wasn't done where the perceived insulting was either.
    --
IT, like I've said, you've got a good heart... and I'd really like to see things simmer down. ...and not get all riled up again! If everyone tries (pretend we're visiting the extended family at grandma's, & have to be polite)... it may just be do-able.

I have an actual limit order to buy (SDRL) at $35 as per your technical analysis.
SDRL closed $36.22 Thursday 1/30, and I placed a limit order for $36 Thursday night for 1/31 but I saw Asian and European markets were down strong before I went to work (yes I work) so I changed the order to $35.

Its only .54 away now. The market is pulling it down. Just sit and wait.

    Good morning gentlemen,

Futures are up. Big question is... will we sell off today or hold the gains? I see they're keeping a lid on gold as usual.

What is our next technical support level?

You gave the perfect advice. I opened a couple of positions yesterday trying not to catch the bottom. All three are in the green today ! Now I know one day doesn't make it a profitable trade

There are some intermediate soft supports, almost not worthy of mention, but the very large major support is 1650, if it should get tested.

It was nice to see (PM) with a 2% bounce today. Not sure where we go from here, but I'm still depositing $ every other week and adding to positions. Still say it's not indicative of what's going on "on the street". I personally see too many good things happening to get all doom and gloom.

I agree, it's not doom and gloom time, the numbers from late Nov, and Dec were too good. It's been interesting to watch the mood change so suddenly, and have such an effect.

I thought end of today was a downturn, ending at about 1/2 the rate that it was most of the afternoon. That tells me, there's more down to come...more skiddishness, and intent to take profits while the taking is good.

Today was much more positive than an explosive early upper, followed by a Niagara-Falls-like collapse. Instead, we had a gradual ascent until after 1PM, then some profit taking, followed by recovery. Then, at 3:20PM there seemed to be a concerted effort by the shorts to trash the day, but this was met with an immediate, strong reversal, and the day finished only three points from its daily high.

Of course, we could still get tested, but in my view today was a positive.

That's so odd. The portfolio numbers on SA are completely wrong, both the ending number and percent change. For IWM they show 30% gain & 108.98. I've forced refreshed the page, and same thing. So opened elsewhere, and you're right, nothing down about this.

"seemed to be a concerted effort by the shorts to trash the day"
How can you tell that's what's happening when the red streak down shows up? And what does it mean that shorts are trying to trash the day? Who's short and why do they care? Is it general index short -- and hoping to keep the negative mood going? That would explain a lot of commentary I hear, that I thought was merely expression, about whether the bulls or bears can take the market on a given day.

The big traders trade volatility, and fear creates volatility, so the party is over as soon as index movements go back to sleepy-hollow condition. Lots the guys who loaded up short or in puts, counting on a break of that 1775 support, haven't covered and are still short. The last thing they want is a gradually-rising market, not until they scare the bejesus out of folks, if possible, and get them to start dumping things in a frenzy and on volume, so they can cover easily.

Broad coalition backs Keystone XL oil pipeline, adding pressure on Obama

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators and House members stepped up pressure on the White House to approve the Keystone XL pipeline (TRP), holding a press conference today at the Capitol where they were joined by labor leaders and Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Gary Doer.

"This pipeline is essential. The time for study is over," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Louisiana Democrat whose presence was a reminder of the dilemma facing Pres. Obama, who is being pushed by several Democrats up for re-election in November to commit to Keystone.

Landrieu says a top option is new legislation that would set a deadline for the president to make a final decision on the pipeline.
Amb. Doer urges Obama to "choose blue-collar workers over Hollywood celebrities" and accept crude oil from Canada instead of from Venezuela.

This would be a big boom to the economy for jobs directly related to this project as well as the halo effect of other jobs added as a result of this phase-4 of the pipeline being approved and executed.

The EPA even gives this project a thumbs up despite all of their due diligence, in which the project passed despite their routine efforts to kill projects like this.

Although the economic impact makes this project a slam dunk, with the EPA's approval, I would like to suggest that from an environmental perspective, given the fact of what Canada is committed to doing, it would be strongly in the US best interest to approve this project for environmental purposes on its own right.

The alternative to this pipeline would be less environmental friendly as transportation of this oil would include tankers, possibly rail, or other transport that could be potentially more harmful to the environment. Canada is moving forward with this with/without the US. Therefore if the US can step up with this phase of the pipeline, we will have control of how this oil is transported and can insure the most environmentally friendly way to transport this oil vs. the alternatives. So from an environmental standpoint, the pipeline makes most sense vs. the alternatives of rejecting the pipeline.

    IT,

Yeah, that's no joke. Dental insurance sucks pretty much, anyways (except procedures ran through insurance are billed at a much lower rate). I'm now entering year 3 of my restoration project. In the previous two, I'd use up the max $1500 annual benefits in a visit or two.

Three crowns at about $300 out-of-pocket each left to go, then I just have checkups to worry about. Time to save my pennies for implants, now. I just want my naturals to get me to 50, at least.

I had an auto-purchase of (XOM) get executed yesterday. Same will happen for (LMT) either today or tomorrow. I'm watching hawkishly on (LINE), (PSEC), (PG), (CVX), (PSX) and (CLX) for a place to park my newly emancipated (WIN) money.

Waiting to see what Friday brings us, then will most likely pull the trigger on at least one of them next week.

    IT:

DOW 15K looking less likley unless some major new bad news.

This pullback is looking very shaky, already. While the initial reactions are predictable, the underlying reality is that the economy remains positive (see ISM today), and, even better, Europe is expanding very nicely, and even Brazil is bottoming.

One must be tactical and incisive in finding value plays. Just waiting for some huge dip, so eyes can be closed and anything bought, isn't likely to happen, at least in my own opinion. Better to average in. Look for yield to provide cover.

Sizable opportunities await in Brazil and Chile for anyone with a tolerance for some volatility and patience. Suggest doing some research on SID, VALE, ABEV, AKO.A, CH. More domestically-oriented issues, like EBR and CIG, are worth consideration, too, but they are more subject to local political whims.

I agree, but if one does not have your experience in picking smartly then I suggest mutual funds that have an expertise in value plays..

I would be one of those picking blindly, and I know it. So why not use mutual funds if one is uncomfortable ?

I have already started to dip opening a position with Tweedy Browne value fund . Will just sit back and let the Pros decide the undervalued ones !!

Mutual funds are ok, if one doesn't want to play ball. What I would suggest, though, is concentrating money in one fund family, like Vanguard, if you are investing directly, so it's easy to change allocations between funds. If you are buying the funds through a discount broker, then, I guess, that doesn't apply.

    Tack,

CH is trading at a historic premium +30% above NAV. 3 year average NAV is only +5.2% premium. Share price -40% in last 3 years. Great 11.5% yield but don't understand your interest here. I thought one had to buy a Cef at below historic nav averages?

You are correct. CH, in just a few weeks, has shot up to a sizable premium. I would await a better entry price relative to NAV.

I hate to rain on your parade, but if you get a chance read Bill Holter's two commentaries in today's Harvey Organ's.
If you can, read Richard Russell's commentary on Feb. 3rd. In part: "I've been writing about the stock market for over 60 years and I can't remember a time when I was as filled with foreboding regarding what lies ahead."
With stock markets, currencies and economies crashing all over the world, I have to agree with both of them.

    Good evening to all...

Two hours to dig my driveway/road out following a little over a foot of the beautiful white stuff. Four-wheeler with plow got me to the end and then the good old shovel did the rest.

Disney is on a roll. Up after-hours on solid numbers. Movies, music, TV, Parks and Resorts, etc. What is not to love about this company?

    Portfolio Talk-
After hemming and hawing, I am dumping GALE in favor of LGF. LGF reports tomorrow and I am hoping to stop the slide that took me out of the Top 10 in a hurry. Glad my real portfolios haven't suffered the same fate. What a great way to try things and not lose your shirt in doing so.
Portfolio Challenge was a great idea and learning experience.

Labatt Ice is calling my name...wait, that was my wife!...

    Have a great evening.
