Will Mr. Market be down due to ongoing tensions?

Oil, gold, NG, all up. Another major winter storm coming across mid Atlantic. Ukraine situation heating up. 10-year treasury looking better, but dollar index is below $80.

That NUGT long might be good. I still think the FED is running low on leverage to crush gold and still think they do not want sub $1,200 gold anyway.

Could be interesting to see the impact on LNG. I haven't tracked the progress of that much but perhaps Al/Tommy, or ? might have some input on LNG.

Time will tell, but this situation in Ukraine is not looking to good right now. It appears that Russia is in the drivers seat even if their actions cause economic harm to themselves.

I would think metals should also benefit from this, short term.

(REM) which is a ETF of mREITS is close to doing the same. Bodes well long term for them.

Me and CWinn are riding MORL

Next will be a golden cross in gold or GLD - from Feb 7

I knew what I was getting into. I expect it to thrash violently: up 10% and down 9%, up and down, until it breaks out above this range as the shorts capitulate. This price action is a minor blip on a 5 year chart of (UNG).
    http://yhoo.it/1cAbIp6;range=5y;compare=;ind...
I would say it has bottomed and is breaking out of a 3-year bottom holding pattern as has been waiting for a reason to go up. That's what has been happening. The wild price swings are showing the lows are behind. After 3 years of not going down, what do you think it is going to do next?

You can still get back in about where you got out. I am thinking if buying some (http://bit.ly/ybQjgc) for real.

3xFunds are excellent trading vehicles, but can not be approached in a cowboy manner, have to be constantly monitored, and timed reasonably well.
One should never be complacent, always consider what to do if it goes the other way, have the knowledge of support/resistance zones of the underlying fund. If the trend of the underlying fund is bullish generally take the long ( buying dips) and avoid the short ( selling tops) until the up trend is broken.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Please my friend get up and dust yourself off, plenty off opportunities down the road.

AR-For the challenge, I went "ALL IN" on DAL.

In real life, I'm more cautious. I do own it, but its only at the 5% level, down from 10% when i took profits on the first leg up. I'm like 80% Bonds; that way I protect the downside and limit exposure. Some call it the barbell approach.

I also like options. Its actually my favorite topic. Let me know if you need some ideas on how they might be used to simultaneously create profit and reduce risk. Keep in mind its s tool not a strategy, so how it is applied depends a lot on which stock you are interested in what might work.

It all depends on the stock, your goals, and what is available at a given time, among other things; no one size fits all, but its a great tool to extract the best returns from a given portfolio, especially if you have the time and inclination to keep your eye on the ball as it moves through space.

I just think that NG has been taken for granted and the universal assumption is that it is supposed to be cheap forever - that it cannot go up. It is not a gold mine, but it is just the commodity that is positioned to fool a lot of people. It is a contrarian play where all the downside is played out.

I expect the weather to remain contrarian too. The NWO HAARP operators in Gokona AK will likely keep up the relentless cold weather waves. It is currently about 20 degrees colder in central IA than in Anchorage AK. About the same here as in Fairbanks and Gokona AK

--No, I mean after three years of not going down anymore. Not going up can also mean it was finding its lows and bottoming.

Seems like you are a good analyst and believe that you're correct on this one. From an investing point of view there is potential and AL mentioned some companies that appear to be promising (CHK) is one of them.
As I gather US politicians would like the European politicians to take a more aggressive stand against Russia, which ultimately could lead the Russians to stop exports of NG and Oil to Europe and provide the US with a new market for the commodities. A lot of factors to consider and somehow have the notion that weather matters the least.
I don't believe in conspiracy (another illusion IMO), it's always about money.

It took just one bullet to trigger WW1,hope that won't be the case in the Ukraine.
The real cause of WW1 was economic woes leading up to the event, global economies today appear shaky also.
Dislike to even contemplate that possibility, but would not rule it out at this point in time.

Would it be too much trouble to add in column T or elsewhere
the starting date of each participant? Obviously someone who's started in August has an advantage as supposed to anyone joining now.
Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Actually, strike that. It can not be put in column T. The dynamic nature of the rankings section would require a rewrite of that part (I am not so inclined as to do that - it would be difficult). Can put people's start dates by their name in the portfolio section if you want, though...

After peaking in Sept 2013 at 11.60 and then failing to close above 11.50 Oct thru Dec '13 and then failing to close above 11.40, in 2014 investors have decided that it only leaves "down" as an option.

$11.50 has been an iron ceiling for it the last 12 months.

It indicates that some think the dividend may not be sustained at the current level, also that its loan portfolio may be suffering some impairment.

It was taken out of the small cap index today. Along with the other BDCs. (TCRD) is down because it missed earnings today. (TCAP) is down because it missed earnings the other day. (PSEC) isn't down as much because it didn't report earnings; it just got removed from the index along with the rest.

Earnings misses are being explained as a poor credit environment where there's more money than companies loaning, so there's competition and rates down (or something like that in the press releases, I think TCRD's.)

I have 2% of my money in BDCs. So it may be a good buying time, but I'm not buying more tempting as it is. Also, if they're struggling now, and ZIRP will end, and junk bonds come back to life... will these stay as "hot"? BuzzBDC hasn't written anything recently that I could find... to give his view. (Beyond comments on articles.)

(PSEC) $10.80 is near term support. $10.00 is longer term support in a two year time frame.

It's all in the Euro right now. Round robin strengthening between it and the Yen. ECB not making a move means a rally in the Euro as shorts get slaughtered and we make a run towards $1.39.

IT linked to my article from today about this and how it ties into the EU's lack of follow-through on sanctioning Russia. Winter's not over yet. :)

Are you using Stockcharts for observing the dollar, or do you have somewhere that you can watch the dollar in Asian markets overnight?

I have not been watching the other currencies except (FXC) and (FXA), but which one are responsible the most for the dollar being down at this time? [dollar down means some other currency is up]

Does the dollar being down mean that international markets don't believe in our "economic and job-growth recovery?" That's what it seems like to me.

I just placed a trade , going with what I have felt for a few years since QE'S started.. I still think gold and the miners have a ways to go. So I will stick with my convictions the rest of the way unless something drastically changes my mind.

I still don't understand why gold hasn't fallen off, so my due diligence says it still should head north long term.. Going with my RLP and beliefs.
The markets are high but so can gold !!

People saying it is a technical move might be right. But I am not convinced yet. My gamble on gold falling after Russia settled down did not happen. So my challenge trade suffered but my conviction just got stronger..

Now I will sit and see what happens >> final answer!

Thanks Tom. I was looking for trade info after US markets close, in currencies.

IT: Gold begins with a technical move in Dec '13. It has fundamentals in the background that are behind it. This initial move that began in Dec '13 will encounter a technical correction soon, but the fundamentals will still be in place. Many who bought in Dec '13 will take ST profits and then gold will back off and consolidate even as Robert Wagner is saying "see I told you this wouldn't last: now it's going to $800." Then after a pause unless we are in a deflationary spiral, gold will resume up.

Like I have stated a few times we are using the challenge to learn. Since my opinion is long term the metals will go higher then why not play the game the same way?

If I am wrong the I learn from this for next year. Daily 10 to 15 dollar bounces isn't what would deter me. Now once/if we get those 100 dollar day movements then something's up !

I will put out my trade of the day--

[I don't have one every day - and this is real life, not Portfolio Challenge]

The trade is (T) and it would be a long term trade. This is the highest yielding dow stock, I think, yielding 5.7% and has not participated in the Dow and S&P record setting action. Instead it has been on a long, steady decline and has hit a support level of $32. It appears to have made a short term double bottom 2/27 and 3/3 and is moving up. As the indexes hit new highs (T) should benefit as it is a quality company and a Dow stock yielding almost 6%.

I am not waiting for it to cross its 50 day MA; it would have to go up $1.5 I am thinking it has just seen the turning point.

    http://yhoo.it/Nx36Cj;range=1y;compare=;ind...

Next support level below is $30, and then $28, but it appears to be going to $34 instead. I am buying 100 at the open

    (T) is the only thing I own that didn't go down today. Gold and interest rate sensitive things like mREITS fell hard. I should have been watching (TLT) or the US Treasuries more closely. There has been an interest rate correction.

AT&T looks like it will fulfill my expectations. It behaved today like it should if it is starting a new uptrend. Held up and closed higher on increasing volume - though below average vol. I am ahead 10 cents. Looks like the beginning of an uptrend to me.

Author’s reply » Retailers look for lift from food stamps

Big Lots (BIG +20%) says it will add freezers and coolers to hundreds of stores this year in a move that will help it capture some of the food stamps business.
The company noted that stores with refrigeration units out-performed in recent quarters.
Dollar General (DG -0.6%) and Family Dollar (FDO -1%) have adopted a similar tactic to draw in consumers with food stamps.

Now how you folks interpret this??? Economy hitting on all cylinders ??
