I could put on this bio my education, work experience, investment strategy, and a nice thin (if I can find one) picture of me in a suit looking *smart*. Sorry but that's not my intent here. Sure I invest, help family make financial decisions, and make a ton of mistakes along the way. But my time... More

  • Interesting Times For All Commodities And Investments!! PORTFOLIO #15.......  121 comments
    Mar 16, 2014 3:54 PM

THIS CHAPTER IS FOR POSTINGS FOR THE PORTFOLIO CHALLENGE ONLY !!

SO THAT ALL UNDERSTAND ANY POST FOR TRADES MADE DURING TRADING HOURS THE CLOSING PRICE OF THAT DAY IS USED. IMPORTANT CHANGE,,,,,,IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS EXPERIENCE MORE LIFE LIKE WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE ORIGINAL RULE THAT YOU HAVE UP TO THE MARKET OPEN TO GET THAT DAYS OPENING PRICE..

FOCAL WANTED US TO HAVE STOPS DURING THE DAY. BLUESKYFOREVER ALSO MADE A SUGGESTION. ACTUALLY I THINK THEY WERE DEMANDS. SO WE EVOLVED AND BECAME MORE COMPETITIVE AS THE RULES GET MODIFIED WEEKLY..

MY POOR TWO MAN IT DEPARTMENT HANDLES IT WAY BETTER THEN THE ACA WEBSITE..

YOU MUST OWN A STOCK THE DAY PRIOR TO THE EX DIVIDEND DATE TO COLLECT THE DIVIDEND!

What started out as a small group discussing anything related to investing has grown extremely educational over the last few months.

We have Authors, Financial Advisors, Seasoned investors, Experts in specific fields, and just the average Joe pitching in...

Folks.. we are growing and posters like it. If you are new to investing then this site is for you.

Here is the current link to our BLOG CHAPTER !http://seekingalpha.com/instablog/5038891-interesting-times/2342802-interesting-times-for-all-commodities-and-investments-chapter-37

The chapters continue to advance so this may not be the latest one. Please just look at the bottom of the chapter for the next link !!

As of now we have a small group of investors nervously playing a game. It is ONLY a game but as I have learned that if it is a competition and we do keep standings people take it seriously. I am happy to see this as I am learning while I lose money ( fiat of course, or monopoly money ) lol

But as we progress we are changing rules to make it fairer and more competitive. I have been received messages from all with your ideas and it is your game as well. So please feel free to add whatever thoughts you have. I hope over time other will join as we are still at the beginning stages.

I urge all to post on other articles and blogs what you like about our chapters and challenge in hopes others will either follow or join in the conversation. So keep posting when you trade why you trade for all to see the reasoning. Good luck to all !!

    Disclosure: I am long PSEC.

Long on NUGT. It's an ETF based on 3X leveraged gold miner stocks. Looking for a two-banger (up 100%) within a month or two. I think Gold is the best place to be for the foreseeable future, and NUGT provides the best leverage for the highest gains on that assumption. All my best technical analysis points to this conclusion, for now.

stacaz; Had never seriously considered NUGT, but you paint an intriqing scenario. Would you sell half of AUY @ a 30% loss, to buy 40 shares of NUGT? I too believe gold will appreciate significantly before years end, but all I know is how to buy stocks & hope something good happens. Has not worked out well for about 15 years. I am tempted to just hold my hand. Your OPINION would be much appreciated for consideration.

I realize that it's a bit late, but my research is showing an annualized rate of return on NUGT at between -30% and -60% over the next 3-5 months, depending on oil prices. If oil falls, the gold miners production costs also will, but currently most mines have razor thin margins. Gold may rise on a weaker dollar, but that doesn't help the miners. They have to buy oil at Brent price as only Alaskan fields get West Texas prices.
As of 11:25 EST, gold has fallen to $1360.30 (Source http://bit.ly/1lJDyVA )
DOW Futures up 1.13%, Most other Indexes flat except Nikkei 225 up ~1.13% Gold futures down ~1%

Let's see - I'm showing holding 2376.49 total shares of vtsmx in the challenge. Record date yesterday of $0.192 distribution per share with reinvest date on 3/24 and payable on 3/25.

    So, with my awesome math skills, 2376 x 0.192 = $456.19.

I'm not sure why the Vanguard site has a separate reinvest date and pay date. I assume because it's a mutual fund and they will just use Monday's closing price to reinvest, so please do that in the challenge. Unless it has to be Tuesday's closing price. Whichever, thanks JBT.

My (DUST) was highly profitable at one point today before falling. Is there any way to sell during the day by either Post at time, or posting a sell target price? Those Short ETF's always fall at close as people fear to hold overnight.
    I'm "Paper-Trade Brave" though LOL.

Yes, you can use a "sell at" trigger, but the monitoring of it and reporting of it are the responsibility of the shareholder. Cannot be adjusted during market hours.

Well in my RLP, I own none of these, and departed from my disciplined Price and Time Targets in this Portfolio. What I am going to do this weekend is reset many positions in accordance with the Market Makers projections, then stick with my stocks for either my PT, or 3 months. While I was doing that, I was making money.
I got my ego into my trading and got burned. Totally messed up what I was trying to prove.
I'll post trades before opening Monday, along with Price Targets and Stops.
Then I'll tell you when something hits.

Over 50% cash right now. I may put in some pre-opening orders, but this market is really frothy.

    (RYL) 46.41 (SNDK) 84.35 (QCOR) 86.74 (ETE) 53.39 (CBI) 92.8

On another note. I have plenty of time to manage the new Challenge if you stay on this site after the Reset. I'm Retired, and can't travel much anyway and even on the road, I could do this from a motel (or any place I can get a Cell Signal) anyway. I even have Office on my Win Phone.
I don't know what arrangements you are thinking of, but I could handle this spreadsheet easily enough.
Let me know whatever you decide.

If your game, that's cool with me. Even trading off weeks or something would make me more willing to continue on with this format... I'm still going to check out the MW virtual portfolio system to see how that works...

If you're comfortable with Google spreadsheets, you can start now if you want. :) For personal trades, etc., just announce in here before you make the changes.

It occurs to me that we could possibly use the SA portfolio function. I'm thinking maybe all we would need to get the ball rolling and go live is request permissions to establish a new identity with multiple access. I'm not "IT" so I'm not sure exactly how that would work, but it might be worth running it up the flag at HQ and see if anybody salutes. Be thinking about the next move just in case it works!

    EA,

SA portfolios are similar to a Yahoo Finance portfolio. It is user managed, and does not count for dividends, etc. All pertinent information can be updated by the user (shares owned, price paid, etc.)

I may be mistaken, but I've never seen anything on SA that resembles our current structure. If there is a link to a group portfolio that is similar, I'd like to see it.

    Thanks.

    JB,

The following selections appear when the "My Portfolio" button is pressed directly to the right of "Home".

    News|Day Watch|Alerts|Holdings|... Valuation|Profitability|Dividends|Debt|Ownership|Edit

My screen displays 8 columns of data when "Dividends" is selected.

    EA,

Understood. But where does it show your dividends received? Where does it have your available cash to invest? It's a tracker - it is in no way dynamic. I doubt SA would devote their programmer's time to make what they have now function as a virtual portfolio competition tool.

But, like I said - if they have something besides the basic stock holding tracker, I'd love to see it.

    JB,

Hope I' not beating a dead horse here, but what about going to a real investment site. I like practice trading for warmups but who knows we may decide to transition to real money at some point. If we start where we can throw a switch and go live so much the better I would think, hi fidelity training environment and all that jazz..

I'm not familiar with "Google" Spreadsheets yet. I would need to learn how to do the links and such. I know how to enter formulas and data into the Cells, but to do everything, I'll need some training.

Skype would be a good way to train me if you are willing. I learn much better by voice teaching rather than reading due to the way my brain reacted to getting blown up several times in VN. Maybe we could set up a Skype session, perhaps later in the week or next week. In the meantime, do you have a link to something I can try to read to learn a little?
Once I get the basics down, I'm sure most of it is rather repetitive cut/paste link setups.

I'd have to get Skype first, I guess... :) Yeah, I'd be willing to do that. It's really no different than an Excel sheet, though. The only difficult part of the sheet really are the formulas for the tracking portion. That part would be better covered in a semester-long Excel-201 course, though.

OK, I'll take a look at those links, and get back a bit later in the week. I've used Excel and other spreadsheets for years, but never had to link them to real-time Data. I'd like to learn though as it would be helpful on my Watch-Lists.
I'm going to be busy for a day or 2 on another project. As soon as I get my plate cleared, I'll message you JB.

Here's another link that explains how to use the '=googlefinance' function (that's where the real-time data is pulled from). Clcik through your own holdings to see its usage. Current price and day's change are the only two real-time data pulled from the internet. The rest is manual entry.
