I could put on this bio my education, work experience, investment strategy, and a nice thin (if I can find one) picture of me in a suit looking *smart*. Sorry but that's not my intent here. Sure I invest, help family make financial decisions, and make a ton of mistakes along the way. But my time... More

THIS CHAPTER IS FOR POSTINGS FOR THE PORTFOLIO CHALLENGE ONLY !!

SO THAT ALL UNDERSTAND ANY POST FOR TRADES MADE DURING TRADING HOURS THE CLOSING PRICE OF THAT DAY IS USED. IMPORTANT CHANGE,,,,,,IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS EXPERIENCE MORE LIFE LIKE WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE ORIGINAL RULE THAT YOU HAVE UP TO THE MARKET OPEN TO GET THAT DAYS OPENING PRICE..

FOCAL WANTED US TO HAVE STOPS DURING THE DAY. BLUESKYFOREVER ALSO MADE A SUGGESTION. ACTUALLY I THINK THEY WERE DEMANDS. SO WE EVOLVED AND BECAME MORE COMPETITIVE AS THE RULES GET MODIFIED WEEKLY..

MY POOR TWO MAN IT DEPARTMENT HANDLES IT WAY BETTER THEN THE ACA WEBSITE..

YOU MUST OWN A STOCK THE DAY PRIOR TO THE EX DIVIDEND DATE TO COLLECT THE DIVIDEND!

What started out as a small group discussing anything related to investing has grown extremely educational over the last few months.

We have Authors, Financial Advisors, Seasoned investors, Experts in specific fields, and just the average Joe pitching in...

Folks.. we are growing and posters like it. If you are new to investing then this site is for you.

Here is the current link to our BLOG CHAPTER !http://seekingalpha.com/instablog/5038891-interesting-times/2342802-interesting-times-for-all-commodities-and-investments-chapter-37

The chapters continue to advance so this may not be the latest one. Please just look at the bottom of the chapter for the next link !!

As of now we have a small group of investors nervously playing a game. It is ONLY a game but as I have learned that if it is a competition and we do keep standings people take it seriously. I am happy to see this as I am learning while I lose money ( fiat of course, or monopoly money ) lol

But as we progress we are changing rules to make it fairer and more competitive. I have been received messages from all with your ideas and it is your game as well. So please feel free to add whatever thoughts you have. I hope over time other will join as we are still at the beginning stages.

I urge all to post on other articles and blogs what you like about our chapters and challenge in hopes others will either follow or join in the conversation. So keep posting when you trade why you trade for all to see the reasoning. Good luck to all !!

    Disclosure: I am long PSEC.

Hi John...time to finally buy that NUGT, lol...

    Seriously, due for a bounce.

Writing an article today to shed more light on gold for people. Unfortunately after any bounce we get, I do expect a test of the lows.

Hi IT! If F&G is around, hi! Coins I see now and then in the comment section.

I have been trading NVDQ in and out, buying the dips (with real money) and doing well. Made a little on NUGT today too (bought under $33), but sold out and will probably buy again tomorrow.

DGAZ will bounce here at some point I think too.

(mostly day trades waiting for the right set ups and going in with larger shares - overnight hold at most)

The next article I am writing is to refute a comment made by a guy I actually like conversing with; Jeffrey.

His comment stated that cash + interest has been better than gold over time. I pointed out that you really can't start that comparison until 1975 when U.S. citizens were allowed to own more than $100 of gold. Do you all think that is a fair time to begin the comparison of the two?

My reply to his comment is here; http://bit.ly/1mxfust

My article will go into more depth and provide the data as well as throw in some more analysis. Not sure if I will post to SA yet. Still boycotting. But I usually come back. Just been busy writing.

    NUGT up 2% today.

Goldman came out last night with a buy on the miners.

NUGT up even though price of gold down from $7 to $10.

That's pretty bullish for the miners.

$34.50 is the HOD and it's right there now, trying to bust through. Any pop in the gold price in the short term should take NUGT higher.

Also interesting to note that JNUG is down on the day. Gold slipping a lil. $1281.70 - down $9.60 for the day.

Gonna be patient on this one and see how the price of gold acts.

A lot of it just depends upon when you bought T-Bills, which ones, and hold to maturity or sell them for better rates in the 79-82 period.
I would not take on a challenge like that at gunpoint-admire your research Doug.
It would take me weeks for an analysis of Fed rates alone.

    Researching stocks is way easier.

Doug- before I look at the reply you made to Jeffrey, let me guess: cash has decreased in value 95% since 1913 or maybe about 75% since 1975. The interest earned on cash is not going to make up for the decline in value. Maybe "cash" isn't really "cash."

I already bought NUGT, a little too early, I agree there will be a bounce hopefully up to 1400, and take profits, then we'll see. Yes, I am looking down the road to a bust like Contrarian Advisor has been writing about, though he has been way early on it too.

Good luck on your NUGT. IMO the article Doug linked saying gold should be at like 812 or so just is not living in the real world where there is a larger population in countries like India where gold is just plain popular to buy, regardless of projected rises or drops. They just want it. I hope you are only a tad early on buying NUGT, as gold fell again a tad today.
    From PR newswire;
    Commodities
In commodity news, oil traded down 1.91 percent to $102.38, while gold traded down 0.52 percent to $1,281.80. Silver traded up 0.05 percent Tuesday to $19.36, while copper rose 0.10 percent to $3.03.

    Hi John and Old Warrior,

    Thanks for the replies.

John, good guess, and one that many including Ron Paul would use, but no, I didn't use that.

I did just finish my analysis (10:00pm Hawaii time) and have put it on my site. You guys are the first to see.

    http://bit.ly/1rlsM9h

I like contrarian John because he gets the deflationary aspect to things which most don't. We think alike although we disagree on the depths to which gold will fall. We are both bullish on it longer term.

Old Warrior, interesting thing about Jeffrey in his article is he is bullish on the miners, yet wrote an artilce saying gold will languish for a decade but then go to $2,700. But he also wrote in the comments that it won't go to $800. He's somewhat all over the place but I like his replies.

You make a FANTASTIC point about gold in saying "researching stocks is a lot easier." There are so many things that pull gold in any direction but only a few that drive a stock. I have had more success with my trading by going away from gold related instruments to stocks. But I still dip into NUGT and DUST with the right set up. I simply take profit when handed rather than hold onto it. I have made the mistake of holding before. I don't repeat, lol.

NUGT up 5.85% today with gold languishing at B/E. I guess the Goldman Sachs call was a good one so far. Lots of talk of M&A which has the area a buzz.

NVDQ setting up for a buy (real money). Hope it dips in the AM. Would prefer it under $17.

Gold had a nice reversal. Good timing for my article.

NUGT not taking off with gold today. Kind of opposite of what occurred yesterday when gold languished and NUGT had a good day.

There was an article that came out that concerns me a little bit on the miners, and fits in with my eventual lower gold price call.

I did play NUGT late in the day Coins...and profited. Will look to possibly buy again tomorrow (Friday).

Sold my 2000 NVDQ for a profit. Got greedy and didn't sell at the top and didn't make as much as I could have, but profit is profit and will look to buy lower again, especially on a dip in the morning.

    Holding EWZ with a profit, up .44 x 800.

DGAZ I mentioned 4 days ago bounced a little bit today but didn't pick any up yet.

Tried to sell that dang EWZ at EOD yesterday but was 1 minute late. Missed the buy of NVDQ @ $16.56...So doubled down just now @ $46.63 on EWZ.

    Bought some YINN @ $20.37.

Will hold for hopefully nice profit on both.

    NUGT looking good.

That was quick. Got out of all positions with a little loss. Things look too ugly. Better to preserve on a day like today as I was fighting the trend. Could have got out with a little profit, but dang if people don't get scared of this Ukraine issue.

Eventually Al! I think I woke up too early Hawaii time. Should have slept in another hour! Cut losses and take winners. This week I am up nicely, but could have easily had another low 4 digits if I wasn't greedy.

Had a little bounce there, but now heading back down. Lots of red on my screen. Metals hanging in there, but even they are struggling since open.

Could go either way right now for the markets. Dow down 145. AAPL might be first to go green if we are turning up.

Scalped a couple times on EWZ on this bounce and only down $14 on it now. AAPL was the first to turn green on my screen. Up $2 now. DOW - 131. Flirted with -128 but can't seem to break through.

Very true Al. I have an unwritten rule that when I am up 4 digits, I sell no matter what. I was up $800 the other day, and didn't sell. Might have to change that rule, lol.

Played the bounce on EWZ again and am up on that overall, and down less than $100 on the day, all commission since my loss for the day trading is only $5, lol. But I used to make 100 trades a day scalping 1/16's and 1/8's to earn 4 digits. Different ballgame today and much harder when pennies are involved.

Not following it today Coins. I bought NVDQ again. It 90% of the time gives me good profit by buying the dip.

Scalped GOOG on that last move up. $518.32 now.

NVDQ is low volume stock, but I seem to be able to play like the Market Makers and buy the dip before they push it up. $16.42 is the low of day so will watch that for stop. 8 cents from where I bought. Big deal. Risk reward is there if we can get the market to rally into end of day!

Too late to buy Farmland. I think I posted elsewhere about land prices.
The Geo-Political truth is in Wheat -That is what the Ukraine produces. If I was into commodities, I would have bought wheat futures as soon as revolution hit Ukraine last winter. Wheat was $5.50 in Jan, over $7 now (July Wheat $7.08). The land my Mother owned in Kansas produces 30-40 bu/acre, but she sold her land instead of dividing it among 4 children. She got ripped off by her brother IMO in the sale, but it was none of my business. I'll ask my brother in Ks what wheat ground is going for.
We were raised there, but I haven't lived there since I was 18 when I left for Viet Nam.
Land where I lived in Iowa has gone up 30x from ~$600/acre to ~$15-20K. One farm I was looking to buy in 88 was priced at ~$550, but the drought of 88 scared me off. That farm not only did not produce a crop that year, but some kind of swine disease broke out in the confinement, and they had to burn the confinement, and destroy all the hogs. The other half of that same section near Lamoni was (according to friends still living there) sold for ~18K/acre last summer (or maybe early 2013). I think around 15K is more common now though. Still, you don't want to have to borrow to buy farmland, as 2 bad crops in a row will break you. I would have had to borrow to buy that land in 88.
What apparently has happened is that big investors moved into farmland ~2012 when the markets were down, and grain prices skyrocketed. Corn reached over $8/bu in July 2012. That land produces 130-160 bu/acre (not great). Corn is still over $5, and Soybeans are about to break $15. On average, land in Iowa will produce ~1/3 the number of bu of beans as Corn. I'm told that richer land near Rochelle, Il produces up to 250-300 bu/acre corn, but that is the best producing land in the US, if not the world.

    OW,

Agree on land prices - just crazy. We have a ~40 acre plot directly behind our house (that's where our golf balls go :)), and our neighbors inquired about buying a couple to expand their property. The owner would parcel it out, but @ $15,000/acre.

So, it remains leased out farmland, and they grow beans there. If the price had been right, we would have bought a couple, too.

Commercial property will often go for that much / more around here. Especially if it's on a highway.

Commercial property can generate the revenues to pay for itself if whatever they make sells. Grain is at the whims of the weather no matter what the demand is. Now if someone had bought a couple of those 40 acres at that price, the next assessment would put the property taxation so high on that land that Beans couldn't pay it. He would almost have to sell the rest.

It's interesting - the last time I looked on Zillow, they valued the entire 40-acre plot @ $37,500.

I think the owner expects the roaring RE market to come back (our subdivision was built in the early 2000's, same original land owner). You can actually see on the Zillow aerial view that there was another subdivision that was planned there... A rough dirt road outline along the outside, and looks like they may have even surveyed and graded 3 or 4 1-2 acre sites.

I doubt the RE market will ever come back enough to develop that land, so I hope the soybeans pay his bills. On the bright side, I'd rather not see anything back there - it's bad enough it's used for farming.

Sulfur Dioxide and Sulfuric Acid killed Coal. Just ask anyone in a large Chinese city, especially Beijing.

Very true OldWarrior...wasn't saying anything good about coal. But from an investment point of view, Obama killed the industry.

Is that why Bill Clinton closed the CLEAN coal mining operations and invested in Chinese "Dirty coal" and increased his wealth? seems rather convenient for the global warming political crowd to do this ,while enriching themselves.

Slick Willie's investments are not altruistic, he, like most politicians wants to fatten his wallet.
While I have certain environmental concerns, Global Warming is low on my list. What is clear though is that China would far rather burn their own coal than import cleaner coal. It's a matter of economics. The Chinese people are suffering seriously; but that is low on the Chinese Gov priority list apparently, despite protest movements.
There is no question that even burning low sulfur coal is still (by and large) more expensive to generate power with when you include the cost of scrubbers and disposal of ash when compared with NG.
Costs include restoration of land at the strip mines, transportation, and the heavy lift equipment to move the coal in and the ash out. Costs that are minimal with NG. One additional note, Norwegian companies are on the verge of being able to harvest frozen Methane from the Sea Floor. There is so much methane available from ocean floors that in a century, it will probably be the primary energy source for the world as oil supplies are drained.
I correspond with a Swede who owns stock in that Norwegian company. I'll ask him what company that is.

Statoil (STO) is the company that I had researched that was trying to harvest Methane from sea beds. I have not researched it in over a year, but the chart looks good.

The best way to harvest methane from a bed is called "the tent". My wife does not like it one little bit when I tent the methane. ;)

Peter Way gave AAPL about an 80% chance to break 690 in the next 3-6 months in an article published this week. I think you'll be ok in the long run.
