As measured by the BLS and removing their highly objectionable seasonal adjustments total employment in the US is headed higher. Currently we are back to about the Y2k levels.
Of course there are approx. 25m (+/-) more people living in the US now as compared to 1999 so on a percentage basis fewer people are working (not shown).

Taking a look at the NSA data on a rolling 3/mo basis and then comparing that year over year job creation has been scant, actually negative on net basis the last 3 months. Besides the rebound in 2009/2010 from the bottom the overall hiring has been anemic during the last 4 years.

A closer look shows that the last 3 months have seen a loss of net jobs in the US. If anything we were in better shape this time last year heading towards Autumn.

Conclusion: No spinning from the left to try to get someone reelected can hide the fact that the latest NFP report was poor.
