  • Fibrocell's ($FCSC) LAVIV product wins prestigious Allure Magazine Award 0 comments
    Oct 4, 2011 5:40 AM | about stocks: FCSC

Fibrocell Science, Inc. (OTCBB: FCSC) is a biotechnology company focused on the development of regenerative cell therapy for aesthetic, medical and scientific applications. Fibrocell's LAVIV (NYSE:TM) (azficel-T) was approved by the FDA in June and became the first and only personalized aesthetic cell therapy approved by the agency for sale in the U.S. LAVIV is an autologous cellular product that uses uses the patient's own fibroblast cells and is indicated for improvement of the appearance of moderate to severe nasolabial fold wrinkles in adults.

What makes LAVIV different from Botox and the myriad of dermal fillers used commonly in cosmetic skin procedures today, is the use of the patient's own fibroblast cells. Fibroblasts are cells that contribute to the formation of connective tissue fibers. Fibrocell makes LAVIV by first removing a small tissue sample from behind a patient's ear. The tissue sample is then sent to Fibrocell's manufacturing facility, where fibroblasts are isolated and grown in a lab to form a personalized cellular therapy. Once prepared and shipped back to the doctor, the fibroblast-containing cell therapy, now known as LAVIV, is re-injected into the patient's face to fill in and smooth out wrinkle lines.

LAVIV won the Allure magazine 2011 Best of Beauty award in the Big Breakthrough Category. Allure is the leading U.S. women’s beauty magazine, published monthly by Condé Nast that is widely recognized for its intelligent, groundbreaking, and much-imitated coverage of beauty. A signature of the magazine is its Best of Beauty awards, given annually in October to the "best, most effective beauty products on the market" after a stringent and comprehensive editorial review. From the Allure website:

    • "LAVIV injectable fillers add volume back to the creases and furrows that are all but inevitable with age.
    • "LAVIV works in a completely new way. It's the first injectable that takes your own fibroblasts—the building blocks of collagen, elastin, and growth factors—and reproduces them in a lab for use in filling wrinkles.
    • "The payoff: Skin stays plump and smooth. It requires that your dermatologist remove a tiny piece of skin from behind your ear, which is then sent to (Fibercell's) lab in Exton, Pennsylvania. There, technicians multiply the skin sample into 500 million collagen-producing fibroblasts, then pack them into small vials and freeze them at (-194) degrees Fahrenheit.
    • "Whenever you want an injection, a vial can be overnighted to your doctor's office. Each treatment consists of three sessions, 3-6 weeks apart. However, in two double-blind clinical trials, dermatologists observed visible results by the third treatment and a significant improvement in moderate-to-deep nasal-labial wrinkles six months later."

WHAT AN EXPERT SAYS: "The results are truly impressive—I've spoken to patients a year later who are still very happy," says Fredric Brandt, a dermatologist in Coral Gables, Florida, and New York City, who served as the lead investigator for the clinical trials. He predicts that LAVIV will have many other therapeutic uses, including improving acne and burn scars. "It's also very safe—injecting your own fibroblasts into your skin is simply a way of increasing normal cell activity," says Brandt, who adds that once you've banked your cells, you won't run out. When the supply runs low, the lab can grow more."
