Tales From The Future. I picked my nickname because many advisors and investors claim they can predict the future of the (stock) markets and somehow pick the winners. I don't. I usually do not engage in short-term trading and myopic analysis (quarter by quarter, without looking at the big... More

  • Wearables And Living Rooms: Major New Entrants Are Coming (AAPL, AMZN And GOOG) 1 comment

Android Wear is the first shot in the race for these new markets...

Google reveals Android Wear, an operating system for smartwatches - LG to make the first Android Wear smartwatch

Have a look at the embedded demo video in the link. This looks much nicer than existing solutions in the smartwatch space.

AAPL is of course rumored to introduce its own wearable devices (H2 2014?).

Some rumors say that AAPL will heavily focus on lifestyle, health and fashion elements* - and not "just" technology:

This could unlock new markets for AAPL (especially women currently not interested in GOOG Glass or clunky smartwatches).

Turning to the living room, AMZN and GOOG and AAPL will also introduce their updated TV boxes / HDMI sticks soon:

    Google:

GOOG already introduced their Chromestick in the US in 2013 and will introduce it in international market soon

Please see earlier Instablogs for more details discussing these two market opportunities for Apple (TV and wearables space).

    ______

    * I discussed this in my longer blog entry discussing an iWatch back in 2013. While competitors such as GOOG Glass could have trouble selling its gear outside of niche ("techie") markets AAPL will probably focus on selling its devices to broader market segments:

    seekingalpha.com/instablog/5760541-tales...

This should make some mid-market and higher-end watchmakers nervous (unless AAPL would work with them as accessory makers and only offer the watch "core")

** As I had expected myself, Apple might just work on an updated Apple TV and not a TV screen (old quotes from Steve Jobs 2010 now surfacing):

"TV is a terrible business. They don't turn over and the margins suck." Of course, Jobs famously changed his mind about products, so it's entirely possible that he came up with the innovation he needed to "crack" the TV puzzle before his death. We'll just have to keep waiting to see if a real Apple TV set ever materializes.

    Disclosure: I am long AAPL.

Author’s reply » A good comment on GOOG Glass versus Android Wear:

"Glass is so 2012. It’s all about Android Wear watches in 2014."

I agree. Glass may work well for vertical business/work-related use (repairs etc.) but I don't see it take off in consumer use...at least not yet. GOOG Glass looks very "dorky" for the time being.

Also, interesting comments in German from the CEO of big watch maker Swatch Group who thinks more generally that the batteries (battery life) remain the biggest problem in wearable devices:

Swatch of course tried to introduce "Paparazzi" devices back in 2004 together with MSFT:

    That JV folded quickly.
