I am currently a student. I use a mix of technical and fundamental analysis to arrive at investing prospects and then do in-depth analysis.

Dec 11, 2010 11:46 PM | about stocks: GMXRQ, CTRP, MFA, NCI, APFC, BAC, FSLR, SPY

I set up a fake account a couple months ago on, and I've decided to start posting updates to it here.

Here's what I've done so far:
    9-20: Account Activated
    9-21: Bought APFC at $4.50ish
    9-21: Bought MFA at $7.50ish
11-02: Sold 10% of APFC stake at $5.51
    11-28: Bought GMXR at $4.50ish
12-06: Sold remaining 90% of APFC stake at $6.16
    12-06: Sold MFA at $8.19
    12-06: Bought NCI at $8.75
    12-06: Bought BAC at $11.68
    12-06: Bought FSLR at $133.24
Notes: The simulated transaction cost is $7 per trade, the same as I pay on my real account. The virtual account had a starting value of $100,000. It is currently valued at $127,897.29, a 27.9% return. The S&P 500 index has returned roughly 9.2% over the same period. Notice how BAC and FSLR are part of this portfolio, but not my actual portfolio. Both have short-term cheap technicals, but longer-term structural problems. I regard both as mostly sound companies, despite their flaws. These two technical picks have done well so far.
    Current Holdings:
2250 Shares of BAC: 22.5% of equity. Up 9.6%
195 Shares of FSLR: 21.1% of equity. Up 3.7%
8000 Shares of GMXR: 33.7% of equity. Up 22.2%
3000 Shares of NCI: 22% of equity. Up 7.2%
$887 in Cash: .7% of equity
I am managing this portfolio similarly to my own, but I'm disclosing this ones for privacy's sake. I will continue to note which companies I own with real money (currently GMXR & NCI). Over-diversification is avoided because it sends me flying down the diminishing attractiveness curve and because I can't follow that many companies closely. Questions are welcome.
