I used to run a limited partnership, boutique hedge fund in the 90s. Retired in 2000 and moved from New York City to Toronto, Canada, got married, raised a family and basically settled down. After a few years in Toronto, my wife got tired of the city’s 8 months of cold weather and insisted that... More

  • To All Those Who Walked The Talk: Thank You! 12 comments
    May 5, 2014 9:16 AM

When I recently presented the idea of starting a new $10,000 public portfolio on the condition that those who make money from mimicking my trades, donate a percentage of their profits to non-profits on the DonorNation platform, many of my readers pledged their support for my idea...

Then, as a test, and a challenge, when I asked all those who over the past 16 months made money through my blog to donate a percentage of their winnings to-date, only a handful actually walked the talk and donated more than $25,000! However, what is most striking and disappointing is that those who made the most, and many I know personally, did not donate a dime...That's right, not a dime! And amusingly, these same folks, in their public comments here, grandly professed their commitment to support the blog's efforts...but when it came time to write the proverbial check, they either went AWOL, or gave me a song and a dance as to why they have not shared their good fortune with any of the many amazing non-profits on the DonorNation platform... And a few, have gone so far as to avoid me like the plague (LOL). To all those who benefited from my blog, but decided to hoard and pay taxes, rather than share your wealth with the world and earn valuable credits with the IRS, I say, congratulations on your good fortune, but unfortunately, going forward, you will not be a part of my small band of committed Givers...

    C'est la vie...

As of this morning, those who "walked the talk," have donated more than $25,000. APPLAUSE! Thank you for your generosity. By sharing your profits, you have proven your commitment to try and make our world a better place for everyone...Thank you! I have no doubt that, going forward, your decision to give will enrich your lives in many, many ways...And for all of you Givers, I want to share this very applicable quote from Adam Grant one more time:

Success should not define one's level of generosity; rather, generosity will define one's level of success; and make it grow exponentially.

    Now some bad news..

We won't be ready to launch our social experiment today, Monday, May 5th...Even though I have finalized the list of folks who will join me on this journey of giving and sharing, due to various issues, mostly technical, I will not be able to initiate my new $10,000 public portfolio tomorrow as originally planned...I know many of you will be disappointed that there has been yet another delay, but the good news is that we are just about ready and I do plan to make my first move(s) in the new O2W public portfolio in the next few days (really!)...

    Please continue to stay tuned...

    :-)

Author’s reply » Darween, so far, about 10 people have donated various amounts, and you are included in that number, totaling over $25,000...actually the total dollar number is greater than $26,000...

Thank you for your generous donation as well...

Some of us lost money when we tried to follow your moves, KP. In my case, a lot of money. Be careful with this new experiment.

Author’s reply » Andy, I am sorry that you lost money following my blog...I do have 3 questions for you:

    1) Did you lose money following my moves when I was transparently sharing all my trades in the O2W public portfolio?

    2) Did you lose money following any specific option
    recommendation(s) that I made here?

    3) Did you follow proper risk mitigation procedures by spreading your risk(s) and buying options in various securities or did you lose money by betting it all on one horse...

I blame myself most, and I'm still grateful that you piqued my interest in options. Specific answers:

    1) The heavy losses came around the end of 2013... I believe you were done sharing your moves publicly. I can't let you off the hook completely, though, because you did recommend SOL. ;) I know that SOL will turn around eventually, but it has languished for many months already.

    2) No, there wasn't a specific recommendation on your part.

    3) I probably had about 1/3 of the portfolio in SOL. Too much, for sure... but you took some big risks when you were starting out with $10k, too.

Bottom line: thank you, and I hope your followers realize that your strategy is extremely risky and best suited for bull markets.

    Hi Karim,

Thanks for the update! I wish that I had the fortune to come across your blog much earlier :-(...but hey, ever since I became your "follower" few months back, I'm happy that I was able to exchange meaningful and spirited conversation with you all along! :-)

You are starting on a wonderful journey and I'm glad to have gotten the opportunity to part of it in 2 ways - first of course to make money from your wisdom and secondly, to make the leap of faith in the art of Giving.

There was one of your recommendations that I took a position in a month or 2 back - ATHX. I landed flat on my face on that...as you might know it did not meet the end goals on one of its clinical trial and the stock plummeted over 50% :-(. I'm glad I bought stock and not options, I plan to hold them with the hope that I recover the invested capital :-)

Casey is doing a nice job in laying the groundwork for the newsletter :-) and best wishes to get it off the ground!

    Hi KP,

    * As of now I didn't donate anything through DonorNation platform.
    * I started following your Blog and learning your technical analysis from July 2013. (been 10 months)
    * I gained just over 100% from your Pick SPWR (My initial capital is $2350)
    * During last few months I lost most of my profits from SOL,
ATHX, VTUS, ATHX, PSDV, GALE (I started GALE when its at $5). As of now all of these losses are on paper (except SOL). I have 2-4 months more time until these expire. I understand that "I AM" responsible for my losses.

I am just trying to present my current status in my options. This is the reason I didn't donate any money as of now through Donor-Nation Platform.

Going forward, In each quarter I will donate 25% of my profits through Donor-Nation. I if miss donation in any quarter you can drop me from your newsletter immediately. I am perfectly OK with that because I know that I never hesitate in giving back.

    Thanks,
    Karthik

    HI KP--

I did miss out on your public portfolio as I have found your blog later in the game. After that I did not participate in the biotech stock you mentioned, as I paused trading for a bit... I wish I did....
I did send the form to Casey late because of my business travels, but I was not accepted in the newsletter, If you add me in there like we have stated, I will donate the 25% as agreed.
Please add me to the list.
    Thank you,

am i still allowed to blog here?

The mission for the donations is a great one and I am so glad to see so many people buy into this. I am there for sure and whether part of the newsletter or not, that has become my mission. I have already started and it feels soooooo good.

Thanks for encouraging us in this direction Karim, it was a good kick in the rear to start NOW.

    Hi Karim,
Kudos! You have successfully managed to influence your blog readers to achieve couple of things:-
    1) Buy into the philosophy of "Giving" and sign up for newsletter
    2) Agree on a consensus donation percentile and donation frequency
    3) For a few, walk the talk - make donation on their 2013 gains following your blog moves

I would like to throw the ball over to your side of the court :-)

Personally, I have kinda felt that logistical information regarding your upcoming newsletter is a little sparse. It would be helpful if you devoted an article on that. For e.g.

    1) How do you propose to let your subscribers know about real time trades?
    2) Proposed trading frequency?
    3) Initial starting capital?
    4) Avg holding period?
    5) Avg number of holdings?
    6) Investment philosophy and sectors? - Long / short

These are questions that come to my mind...I would love others to add to this list as well with questions they might have as well.

I got the privilege of going to Leadercast yesterday in Atlanta. For those not aware of this conference, it is sponsored by Chick-Fil-A and has many motivational speakers throughout the day to help future leaders in different companies focus on their leadership. Yesterday's theme was 'Beyond You'. This theme fit perfectly with what we are doing here at Options2Wealth. You cannot be a leader without giving. Whether it is your time, your knowledge or your money. Very fascinating the timing of 'things' in one's life. The speakers were, in order, - Andy Stanley, Dr. Henry Cloud, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Laura Schroff, Laura Bush, Malcolm Gladwell, Randall Wallace, Bill McDermott and Simon Sinek. Tutu's speech was satellite link up in Capetown, South Africa and Mrs. Bush's was a taped interview. My purpose for being there was to show me that I need to give more. I wanted to share this experience with my giving partners.
