This past week I have published 2 articles on the beverage industry. In my first, Things Can Go Better With Coke: 3 Ways For Greater Returns, I began by researching Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) in an effort to better understand this widely held and recommended stock. This led to the discovery of better alternatives with more robust share price growth and dividend growth.

In my second beverage article, Coffee Heats Up With Recent Gains: Blend These 4 And Brew To Your Taste, I started out screening for companies with 5 year total returns of 250% or greater. This led me to Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ:GMCR) and that in turn led me into a deeper research of the leading coffee brewers. Here again, my initial research goals took an interesting and unanticipated side trip which identified some excellent opportunities for growth in both individual companies and a sector segment.

My point in laying out the process which resulted in both articles is that almost any research premise will lead to something fruitful even if it is not your original research objective. The important thing is to define a research objective or screen and keep an open and inquiring mind as you dig into the results it begins to yield up. This is true even if the results themselves fail to bear out the original assumptions or expectations you had in defining the screen.

Investors that keep these simple lessons in mind will have no trouble at all finding attractive opportunities trolled up in their nets even if they went fishing for something else to begin with.

    Good luck and good investing.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.
