  • Follow-up On April Fool's Day Portfolio 0 comments
    Apr 3, 2013 8:44 PM | about stocks: DIA

I'll be leaving the April Fool's post online as it was originally written - I did correct one typo today - for any late arriving comments. Yes, I am still betting on Amazon to be the frontrunner in e-delivery services, though Google's announcement of Google Express (after I had drafted the post) will certainly make it a more interesting race.

Most of the feedback I've received on the portfolio seems to sum up to: "what's the joke?"

There isn't one. Sorry! Maybe I missed that it had to be a parody? Next year, perhaps.

The companies were chosen to mirror the present Dow in terms of sector representation. Disney of course corresponds to Disney, Monsanto to DuPont Chemical (yeah, they sell seeds too) and to Caterpillar.....etc.

A point I wanted to bring out is that we want our investments to grow, but companies that grow often change, sometimes in ways we don't like. That makes predicting future results more difficult, even if we just buy the index. Would I want to buy the Dow 30 etf (NYSEARCA:DIA) if Philip Morris (NYSE:PM) were in it? I don't know. Maybe not.

If there is a "foolish" aspect included at all, it's that companies typically don't grow from microcap to megacap in just 30 years. Microsoft and Cisco notwithstanding. Many of the Dow components have been around since the 1800s. That's something to consider before overweighting one's portfolio in speculative stocks and IPOs.

Oh, and Green Railways does not belong there. It would be on the Dow Jones Transportation index. For those who think there's gotta be a "gotcha," that's it.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.
