I like to keep my open StockTalks to a minimum, so I'm archiving...

June (ongoing) - I'm looking now for the companies that are putting cash to work. Reliable dividend-paying stocks in the consumer staples sector are overvalued and elsewhere economic growth remains slow. Mergers and acquisitions can add market share; also we are at a point in the business cycle where consolidation is a consideration.

Acquisitions can include buying all of a company (JCI's purchase of joint venture partner TJC, FWLT's purchase of NorthAm Engineering), taking a majority interest, buying a subsidiary or division (BX and GFA), or just acquiring a product, as GDOT (Walmart-brannded GE Bank cards) and QCOR (Synacthen) have done. The selling company may also hope to improve its prospects, as in DLIA's sale of one of its brands.

May 9 & March 10 - I'm expecting falling coffee prices on the commodities market to hold down JVA share values. The company does not have the prroduct diversification and markup potential of GMCR and SBUX, which have both been rising this year.

April 7 - new Facebook phone "Home" screen: near-term the money flow may be to the phone manufacturer, HTC (2498.TW). Can Facebook profit from this? The app favors instant messaging, which suggests teens and pre-teens will be the heavy users as they text at far higher rates than adults. Sponsored content is therefore the route I believe that FB will need to take to monetize, rather than relying on ads which require a user purchase.

April 2 - Forbes article on innovator/disruptor companies includes exchange-traded firms Illumina (ILMN) and Solazyme (SYZM) as well as crowdsource funder Kickstarter. Illumina is in the business of rapid genome sequencing, used to diagnose genetic disorders. Solazyme develops biofuels from algae. SA member "Chines33" says call volume jumped.

March 19 - Companies which may have exposure to the Cyprus banking crisis: ORIG and ING. SA member "1980XLS-2.0" offered a link:

March 16 - Deregulation of communications in Mexico is working its way through the country's legislature. Two possible outcomes are more firms offering phone and broadcast tv, or increased foreign investment in the existing companies. ADRs declining in price - AMX and TV.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.
