Middle East and Africa Turmoil is time to push for Alternative Energy. 0 comments
Solar, wind, and wave energy are becoming more and more viable as the costs have been reduced. With the new forms of energy becoming less expensive and the eventual reality that oil will become more expensive, there will come a time when the scales tip in the favor of alternative energy.
As for investing, take your pick and place your bets on the technology that you think will best profit from the forthcoming balance of cost in energy. Siemens (SI) and General Electric (GE) are both companies that have been moving forward with many forms of alternative energy and obviously offer other means of growth potential to hedge your bet.
Solar plays such as STP, JASO, FSLR, SOLR, TSL, CSIQ are more of the well known companies that warrant a closer look. If you do not want to pick and individual stock, you can always go with an ETF such as TAN.
Wind presents a few prospects as well, such as TRN, MTZ, OTTR, AMSC, AES, while one of the ETF plays is PWND. The German wind company Vestas (VWDRY.PK) is a well known company that has reached a potential entry point after declining for the last year.
Two wave players include PCG, OPTT. Wave energy seems like a no brainer because of its never ending supply via tidal changes and the fact that many of our largest cities are located near the coast. However at this point it seems to be less established as Wind and Solar.
