  • Its a combination of air brush painting plus a lot of 3d imaging program (birdcage) work. Snapshot at a high resolution.

I see it as a mining operation using a solution process to extract the minerals. Working on a planet with reducing methane atmosphere, they don't have to worry about pollution, and the local chemistry does the work so long as they supply energy to keep everything from freezing solid.

The same wrong-headed idiot-ology that permeated the government 20 years ago and set the meltdown bomb ticking is still there, intact, even re-elected and re-invigorated. Having committed the perfect crime, and gotten away with it, what possible motive would the political class have for altering a gameplan that has served them (if no one else) so well for so long?

I wouldn't enter based only on the below, but next year they start producing bio-diesel for all ground equipment at LAX, they have certified jet fuel for any airlines that want it, have it in test with the military and their fertilizer plant should now be doing well and NG prices (used to make the fertilizer) have remained low.

Stock price recent took a pummeling.

If one waits for the pop off the news to die down, a small price should be obtainable.

Highly speculative, of course, but I can see some nice upside in a couple of years.

  • If it's time for UUP is it also time for EUO? Any opinions on Pro Shares Ultra Short Euro (EUO)?
    7 May 2011, 10:43 PM Reply Like
  • Checking, it does the same as most leveraged ETF - tries to provide *daily* performance, less fees and expenses, that's equal to x times the (inverse of) the underlying. This means a daily reset and as long as there's not too many reversals of larger magnitude on the way to your exit point you should track pretty closely.

Even if there's some tracking errors along the way, if the trend is strong and long enough and your time-frame is short enough, you can still do well.

Expense ratio is 0.95%. Net assets $356.3M, liquidity of 1.9M 10 day average seems OK so you shouldn't have entry/exit problems.

I took a look at (DRR), but it's daily volume is much lower, only 34.8K 10 day average, so entry and exit at desired points may be more "iffy". It's trading at a higher premium and lists no net asset value. But it lists an "investor fee" of only 0.65%. I don't know if this equates well to "expense ratio" or not. It seems to track as well as EUO though. Maybe this one doesn't actually own anything.

I've not read either prospectus, so consider doing so for yourself to fill in the blanks.

The first thing I would caution right now is to think about how long and how far this will run. EUO already made a big pop since Wednesday morning, running from a low of ~$15.99 to a high of ~$17.37, +10.92%. DRR didn't move as much, going from a low in the same period of $35.64 to a same period-high of 38.88, +9.1%.

If you think Portugal will really do it (unlikely IMO) or that Spain will come up on the radar relatively quickly, this should be an easy trade for you. If not, then you need to consider if we might see a relatively steady drift back to the lower ranges recently seen in the (FXE) around $13x area. From the current $143 that's a nice drop and you could do quite well.

Since the EUO does seem to track fairly well over the last six months, where we did see a pretty much steady unidirectional trend, the risk from slippage seems minimal.

Do be aware that many currency traders are oriented towards Elliot Wave Theory trading and that might cause currency moves for which folks like you and I might see no reason.

I think it's worth a shot if you've got your risk management strategy well defined and stick to it. Just keep in mind that day-to-day, there's always a new "excitement" that will move the relative values. Unlike most equities, we don't have fairly well-defined event schedules - we're more at the mercy of the daily news hits.

  • Since ULE and EUO are strictly dollar/euro related, as opposed to UUP and UDN that are the dollar vs. a basket of currencies, I like your odds of success with ULE/EUO better than with UUP/UDN. I don't like the 200% leverage much unless its a slam dunk. The leverage requires trading for a quick move with your best entry point being a pause in movement before the next lurch... and then get out... and repeat... jagged price movements will erode your gains in leveraged funds in my experiences.

Just my two cents, for what they're worth

  • Do you think Comex will still have physical silver shortages with this pullback? At what point do raises resuilt in rising prices rather than falling? And is there counterparty risk here yet? I'm interested in opinions. I think further raises after the one this week by Comex will result in silver price rises nowmeaning there is a tremendous shortage of physical silver for delivery.

  • Just as with the steady march of rate reductions used by the Fed during the meltdown, culminating in zirp or even minus effective interest rates, silver margin fees have reached such a height that the leverage to be gained from the use of them has been grossly destroyed. The last few hikes have already demonstrated that they are no longer effective. Margin ratios this low mean that the remaining investors are far less affected by this manipulation. Destroying leveraged silver positions with this weapon has been accomplished. Silver investments do not exist in a vacuum, the darwinian calculation involved has already occurred, and movement away from physical silver futures and into other investments is an established reality. The days when a major portion of the market was composed of heavily leveraged silver futures purchased on margin are gone.

Why pay skyhigh fees for silver margins, when alternatives will yield a much lower overhead and better chance of profits?

From here on out silver volatility will mean something different from what it meant in the past. Major traders, miners and royalty streams are cutting the exchanges and the mint out of the silver loop. They are minting what amounts to their own silver coinage, and selling direct to the public and industrial consumers.
    9 May 2011, 10:54 AM Reply Like
  • It is interesting to see silver rise today as well. As mentioned before the selloff is over and continued limited supply may push silver to $50 again. This is not a hunt brothers scenario, price recovery is a real possibility on real delivery demand.

Author even mentions my favorite conspiracy theory (which I agree with him as being surprisingly believable in this case) that GS is trashing the REE sector in order to grab a large position (essentially getting in on the action already under play by their competitors at JPM, C and MS).

  • REE is a limited market that GS or any other monied bank/brokerage with access to Federal Reserve cash can crash easily. I would still be cautious about being in REE since the rage these days is big banks causing commodities crashes. They make a tidy bundle on short term overleveraged players even though they themselves are overleveraged. After all, they are insured by the public in case they accidentily screw up and threaten to go bankrupt again.
    9 May 2011, 12:12 PM Reply Like
  • WIth the REE players we primarily work with being too small to effectively short (or located on foreign exchanges, where the manipulators lack the power they exercise so freely on corrupt American exchanges), the theory is that they use their bully investor pulpit to talk down prices, while shoveling long shares in. Eventually they have to reverse the course, with glowing estimates of the same company's chances, at which time they can cash their long shares for big gains. (This precise scenario is playing out right now with Lynas, including the recent GS buy recommendation, which is odd given the laughable "rare earths are not rare" drivel they simultaneously issued).

  • Anybody experiencing issues with the "My Feed" tab? I'm getting 504 Gateway Timeouts. Sometimes up comes the most recent comment as being 10 or 18 hours old. Sometimes it takes forever to load.

Further, I'm seeing comments in articles where I've commented, or have checked a column I want to track, and I'm most certain there were new comments that did not get "flagged" for tracking purposes.

We all know SA has tried to upgrade loading times, but I'm simply not seeing that those times have improved.

  • Correct me if my memories are wrong, but it feels like typically oil/gasoline prices have a significant drop September - November of an election year.

Without an election this year, I feel like prices in fact need to move up the next 15 months for the publicity stunt of bringing prices down into the election cycle.

Then again, Democrats do find creative ways to foul up even the most obvious political moves.

  • CaY'est: Greetings. It's the follow on effects he fears. As energy costs rise so does inflationary pressure. Even the death eaters can't continue to hide, spin and ignore it. Rising energy costs also place a drag on an already ailing economy with the illusion of a jobless recovery. This illusion must be maintained or improved if he is to get another term. With unemployment at 9% adjusted rate or over 17% real numbers his prospects aren't very good. Thus the economy must be somehow put into overdrive and reduce unemployment before summer 2012. That means crude oil prices have to fall far and fast if those goals are to be met. After all inflation and unemployment are lagging indicators that trail by about six months.

  • Rain: The other early oil sands and gas play I like, and now own, is Oil Sands Quest (BQI). Both (TAMO) and (BQI) are long term holds with high volatility futures. Both by 2016 could very well be megabaggers.

Good time to get involved with BQI, as they just had a secondary shelf offering; today's closing price comes in below the offering price. Don't trust my convictions though, and your DD is welcomed either here, or in my Instablog that's now about 20 months old.

Since I first (recently) mentioned TAMO the daily volume has exploded, and the few shares I own have twice been up by 100% or more. I'm hoping TAMO returns into the low .2x area where I'll feel comfortable doubling or tripling down. Today's high volume means there are sellers out there. The amount of buyers surprises me.

Both could also go bankrupt, or both could also be bought out.

So someone got crushed and may get crushed further. Considering we don't know who has all the exposure and if they dump their inventory on the market demand for new contracts may wane for at least a month or two.

  • Now stuck in evil cespool. Phys therapy, pain meds, sleep. rinse wash and repeat.

Thoughts on silver. I am waiting for a retest of the lows last week or test above $40 to see if we are in the bottom yet. Have a ridiculous bid at $30 on a bar of silver at monex.

Think we will repeat this May (delivery month) margin game for July delivery month and that will push metals really low for the summer doldrums. Metals usually bottom in August but July might be it for this year. Will have to see. For now Jack be nimble, jack be quick is the game I think folks should play. I am in to much of a doped up state to rationally play, might sleep right through it and lose my a$$. I am side lined for now.

Best of luck folks. Just wanted to get that thought out. If next low is higher than last week its a good sign till the end of June when I think the Margin game comes again or the fear of it comes in its place.

Reaffirming my $50 silver for December now, with manipulation included. Free market still eludes us but getting closer I hope. Physical buyers must have enjoyed the plunge making July delivery even more difficult, Manipulators forget about the reaction to every action.

Now back to the recliner. I think I will burn it once I have recovered. Its become a prison with bad memories no longer a sanctuary after work.

Sorry I f I was rambling, just trying to keep a clear thought for 5 minutes is a challenge.

They may have chased all the money that's going to leave out of the silver market with all of these margin gyrations. There will come a day when they raise margins and no one pays attention because they are all cash deals. Won't that be funny? At that point all they could accomplish is driving prices higher by lowering margins and creating a bubble. That event will tell us the time to find the exits is near.

  • ATPG - wondering if the recovery act today is going to put pressure on the shorts and create a short squeeze. Tough being short when you can't make money off a "bad" earnings report.

RNN, like TLON, is moving up on high volume today (double avg daily volume at 2:30pm for both).

Thinking about TLON... think overall the market is due to rotate toward healthcare/pharma...

AQSFF, nice two days... still no info on private placement (very annoyed on that - apologies, no one will talk to me)...

Enjoying dumb luck with DF today... never bought enough... never thought my biggest gainer on a day would be dairy products.

Not sure about precious metals... I'm selling nothing... but the last pull back doesn't feel like it completed... not sure... maybe silver has resumed trajectory, but this might be one heck of a dead cat bounce. I'm 50%+ in precious metals and holding until central banks change their ways regardless of ups/downs...

Am agnostic on oil near term, but think there are more reasons for it to go higher than there are for it to go lower through summer 2012, and then post-2012 election cycle.

Not the sort of changes which reassure me.

I'd also look hard at their gold mine and base metal projects, before I took the plunge again.

For now, I'm laying off that stock. Oddly enough, their problems appear to be helping the palladium price (at least, I'm seeing them crashing and burning and the price going up a little as indirectly connected). Less production and a much higher production cost might well mean a higher market price for their competition's product.

  • Sorry, I double checked the source and it is NOT reliable, and not current, either.

Norilsk used their old line last quarter, and it would appear will continue using pyro methods (palladium production was still there, though down slightly 1%).

    www.nornik.ru/en/press.../

Looks like they will continue to develop the Activox process, and keep the Demonstration plant in Botswana running, but the higher costs they mention have caused them to shelve the Tati project, looks like. I suspect the record high prices for Platinum and particularly Palladium has something to do with that decision...
