  • The Least Talked About Driver Of Growth: American Energy Independence 3 comments

Warren Buffet has said repeatedly that he doesn't take macro considerations into his investment analysis. His position in BYD, an automaker and technology company based in Shenzhen, is simple: it's cheap. Although the market can stay irrational longer than accounts can stay rational most people read the reports of America's future energy outlook and can't help but go out for a few months of sushi. Although Europe relies heavily on Middle Eastern oil, especially that of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, America relies largely on Mexico and Canada. This is forecasted to change due to innovations in Shale, abundance in natural gas, enough coal for 300 years, and petroleum reserves. Although Munger has made the point that every barrel of oil imported from someone else's backyard is your friend it's not entirely clear if the traditional calculations of human energy, labor, or other resources for finite oil will hold up in a world moving towards better or alternative forms of energy, at least for America.

What remains clear is that other drivers of growth, in Silicon Valley or Seattle, are not in a bubble. Their success however is largely based in a world in balance, both environmentally and in terms of stability. What is the price of stability given the outlook?

    Disclosure: I am long BRK.B.

Could you please elaborate on the assertion that there is internal stability within Silicon Valley/Seattle?

Author’s reply » It's future isn't guaranteed the same way IBM, Sony, and HP no longer dominate the electronics industry which for some probably was unimaginable.
