What Can We Learn From CT 3G Handset Exhibition 2011
ü         This exhibition was setup by China Telecom in an attempt to enrich CDMA ecosystem and enhance the cooperation of industry chain.
ü         The main players in the exhibition are mobile device makers. Other players such as chipset vendors(except Qualcomm who is very active), OS vendors, SP, CP were seldom seen.
ü         The exhibition lasted from June 17th to June 19th. The president of E-surfing, Xiaoweiyang, visited nearly every booth.
                                              Highlight and Trend
ü         The market of dual-mode devices is growing rapidly. Thanks to the competition of domestic carriers and the support of chipset vendors, dual-mode devices have become a characteristic of this exhibition and are launched by most of participators. Qualcomm 7627, a dual-mode chipset, seems to be the mainstream chipset platform.
ü         More and more domestic handset vendors have launched Android-based smart phones, accelerating the penetration of smart phones while imposing high pressure on prices. Haier, Lenovo, TCL, K-Touch, China Wireless, Myltmobile, Opzoon, Tongwinmobile, Upad, Hesense, Hualu, Ctyon have launched Android-based smart phones of which most are dual-mode ones. Design houses such as Thundersoft function a lot in popularizing low-end chipsets and providing total solutions.
ü         The domestic market of SME OA is booming and bringing tremendous business opportunities for domestic enterprises. Although Rim has showed off its SME solution comprising email push, instant messaging, mobile OA, simplified management, a number of domestic enterprises are duplicating the mode of Rim and providing better customized services with lower prices. They can talk equally with telecom carriers and enjoy subsidies and revenue sharing. I do not see any hope for Rim to explore domestic SME market.
ü         Thanks to strong demand of telecom carriers, Tablets are attracting more and more players. Compared with tablets of 10 inches by Apple, tablets of 7 inches seem to have some advantages in carry. Moreover, carriers prefer to tablets because tablets are customizable, 3G embedded, better than netbooks in user experience, and pre-loaded APP and contents of carriers.
ü         Device makers are challenging the balance point between user experience and convenient carry. China Wireless launched a super-large handset with 5-inch screen. Although the handset is acknowledged by some businessmen who do not want to take both handset and tablet, whether it can be a fashion is unknown. Personally, I think it caters to a niche market for it is too big for common people.
ü         3D naked eye technology is expected to be widely deployed in devices. The demonstration of 3D naked eye handset and tablet is wonderful and impressive, obviously enhancing user experiences in entertainment such as video and game. The 7 inch screen is priced around $100 and is highly favored by many device makers of which some want to launch tablets with the screen early next year.
ü         Handset, an indispensable portable tool, is destined to play more and more roles by deeper dive into our lives and work. HTC seems to exhibit visitors its concept and understanding at its booth. AIWA, a professional game developer and operator based in Taiwan, showed its latest complex games with the help of gravity sensors at HTC’s booth. HTC also invited visitors to participate in self-photographing which can be automatically converted into an advertisement for HTC handset. Moreover, more smart little functions are embedded into HTC phones. For instance, the weather can automatically adjust according to the current place where users stay. Once HTC successfully initiates a fashion move led by young people, especially those in China Mainland, it can sustain its success. However, it is still early to tell HTC is walking in correct direction.
ü         QRD is one to two years away from maturity. QRD is immature, reflected by entry fee of $25,000, high-cost BOM, and inflexible support. It has now been under great pressure by 6573, a HSPA SOC chipset by MediaTek, which is postponed to launch due to modem problems. QRD may not show us its genuine strength until next year or the year after.
