Cancer is a scary thing. No one likes hearing the word, let alone hearing that they have it. A cancer diagnosis can be the hardest thing a person goes through, and cancer - all forms of it - does not discriminate. Young people, old people, men, women, and people of all races, sizes, personalities, and professions are diagnosed with cancer every day.

Maybe you've been lucky enough to be cancer free, or maybe you're one of the millions who have been diagnosed with some form of cancer. Whatever your experience with the disease is, one of the best things you can do to help the cause is contribute to raising awareness. Though this line of thinking applies to any form of cancer, this month, breast cancer is especially top of mind.

By now, most people are aware of the countless companies and organizations that "go pink" in support of breast cancer awareness. This is a sign of support on a business level, but sometimes, participation on an individual level can mean way more. Whether it's through a one-time donation to a research center or by organizing awareness events in your community, there are countless ways to show your support in October and throughout the year that don't require massive dollars or massive amounts of time. It only takes a tiny bit of effort and a little bit of creativity.

This week, we're encouraging you to get out there and join in the fight against breast cancer. How can you get involved? We've put together a few ideas to help you get started.

1.Organize a community walk or run. October is a great time of year to get out and enjoy the crisp fall weather. Take advantage of the prettiest time of year and host a walk or run outside. All registration fees can go to an organization of your choice.

2.Organize a local fundraiser. Similar to our suggestion in bullet #1, but get creative by having a candy bar sale, a popcorn sale, or maybe even a silent auction. The possibilities are endless!

3.Volunteer at a local clinic. Call local clinics or cancer support groups in your community and offer to volunteer your time. Many places need drivers to take patients to and from appointments or just another person who can offer a kind, listening ear.

4.Make a donation. Find an organization (The American Cancer Society and breastcancer.org are good places to start) and make a donation. These dollars will be used towards research and raising awareness.

5.Wear pink. Everyone has some pink clothing laying around somewhere. Even the tiniest flash of pink, perhaps via an earring or a bandana, is a great way to let others know you support breast cancer awareness. And guys? As the saying goes: "Real men wear pink." - especially in October!

Remember, it doesn't take much to get involved, and as survivors and health professionals will tell you, even the smallest effort is meaningful. October is the perfect time to get involved, but don't let that stop you from raising awareness throughout the year. You'll be glad you did.
