  • ForceField Energy Inc. (FNRG) Sees The Light 0 comments

In the drive to save energy, attention is often focused on things like automobile efficiency, along with reducing the energy required for heating or cooling, or the power required to operate the machinery of business. But an important technological revolution has been steadily progressing in an area of energy consumption that affects virtually every part of modern life. It's the area of lighting, something obviously required for all business, residential, and automotive use. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, roughly 12% of all electricity consumed in the U.S. goes to lighting, amounting to 461 billion kilowatt-hours. The technological development that is now beginning to revolutionize this ubiquitous aspect of daily life is the rapidly evolving field of LED lighting.

Since the time of Edison, light has essentially been a byproduct of heat. Even today, an incandescent light source is primarily, if unintentionally, a heater. That is to say, well over 90% of the energy used to run a standard incandescent light bulb goes to heat, not to light. In cool climates, a little extra heat is not usually a problem, but it is still an unmanaged outflow of energy, forcing the user to pay for a lot of heat in order to get a little light.

The invention of fluorescent lighting, and today's compact fluorescent lights, was a major step, greatly increasing the amount of light generated per watt of energy consumed, but fluorescent lighting brought with it a number of limitations in terms of applications and quality of light output. Other technologies have also been tried, but costs and other factors make them less practical as an overall solution.

LED lighting represents a qualitative shift in our approach to lighting, extracting light directly from solid state light emitting diodes. It's a technology that has been far more flexible than traditional approaches, resulting in cost, efficiency, and quality improvements that now make it the base lighting technology for future applications. The most important property of LED lighting is its efficiency. The U.S. Department of Energy sees LED lighting as the single most efficient form of lighting available, repeatedly shown to be the most cost effective lighting source available.

ForceField Energy is the exclusive distributor in the America's of a major global LED producer, but has gone one step further by setting up a financing and payback plan for businesses that makes outfitting companies with LED lighting an obvious and compelling choice, resulting in sales to a growing number of companies, including Fortune 500 companies. This is especially important because the global LED lighting replacement market is estimated to represent a trillion dollar opportunity.
