Lightreading.com revealed yesterday that TiVo's (TIVO) $5.3 million acquisition that closed October 24th and mentioned in my most recent article about the company was for Zinc.TV, the video discovery and personalization arm of ZeeVee.

Zinc.TV technology has been migrated to the Cloud and allow multi-platform, device independent, discovery and personalization of both linear and Over The Top (OTT) video content. This appears to be very much aligned with TiVo's Pique social initiative which is currently in beta.

Zinc.TV facilitates three things for TiVo - content discovery across various platforms (including increasingly popular Internet-only TV shows), personalization of a users favorite content, and access to content from wherever you are (no apps, but "lightweight HTML" makes it accessible from just about any device).

The Zinc.TV acquisition appears to be a bargain for $5.3 million that adds to TiVo's impressive patent portfolio and significantly improves TiVo's technology position when it comes to unifying content across heterogeneous video sources.

Disclosure: I am long TIVO.
