Is Natural Gas the way forward?

I question the validity of output claims by natural gas corporations which, for the past few years been touting Natural Gas as the way forward for the USA.
The Word on the street is Natural Gas is not as profitable as once thought, and output is not sustainable for the long term. The futures market over the past three years has been disheartening.
Natural Gas Corporations are focusing on liquids, butane and propane and capping wells to extract the gas at a later date.
The issue at hand seems to be the US goverments' inability to pass legislation coupled with the Natural Gas companies pursuit of profits from liquids.
Infrastructure also seems to be a major issue.

Question: how much nat gas is out there? Is it substainable? and is it a viable alternative for Crude?
