AMR Corporation (AAMRQ) and US Airways Group, Inc. (LCC) announced the completion of their merger, creating what is now the world's largest airline, toppling United Airlines. The merger, which endured a lengthy approval process, is sure to face continued scrutiny as the newly-combined company has to decide how it wants to merge websites, rewards programs, and reservations systems. The new airline, formally titled American Airlines Group, will trade on the NASDAQ as AAL. The combining of the airlines is expected to take 18 to 24 months, with each airline continuing to operate mostly independently, as measured steps are taken to consolidate the two groups. The new American Airlines will now consist of a network of 6,700 flights with over 100,000 employees.
