    Sep 11, 2013 10:19 AM

This morning, HFMWeek shortlisted Rangeley Capital as one of the top performing hedge funds.

Against the backdrop of difficult market conditions and growing investor sophistication, alternative investment managers are fighting to stand out from the crowd. With new launches every day, hedge fund numbers are approaching the 10,000 milestone raising the bar and the competition for asset growth and performance even higher.

The HFMWeek US Performance Awards will celebrate those hedge funds and funds of hedge funds that have stood out in this competitive market over the past 12 months, rewarding those that have outperformed their peers and demonstrated impressive growth through the volatility of the last year.

HFMWeekis shortlist for this year's US Hedge Fund Performance Awards:

    Event Driven Under $1 Billion

    • Akanthos Arbitrage Fund
    • Alden Global Distressed Opportunities Fund
    • Cambrian Fund
    • Corre Opportunities Fund
    • Rangeley Capital Partners
    • SM Investors II
    • York Select

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

Congratulations Chris. If I was an accredited investor I would be thrilled to have you investing on behalf of my family. Alas, I can merely attempt to grab your coattails as you fly by. Thanks for all of your great work here on SA.

Chris, does the Jobs Act make it easier for you to discuss things like performance publicly?

    Author’s reply » David,

Details are yet to be clarified, but in the future our rules will probably be more like that of the mutual fund industry. While the statute is already the law of the land, the regulators still have to come out with details of how they will interpret and enforce it.

On one hand, we still have first amendment rights to speak and I like to speak and write about investing ideas. On the other hand, ours is a private partnership and a majority of our capital is internal (partners and our families) so even after the rules open up when we could, in theory, say, we will still be more private than some of our competitors.
