    while they might not have the same accomplishments as people have discovered big things, and while they might be pop culture icons, I would say that they are Heroes who have helped interest people in science again. In a nation with such awful scores in science and math, the true areas of real innovation, you need someone to inspire people, to show people theres more than just numbers and equations.
