  • Etiquette Question Of The Day 20 comments

What hour of the day should one expect a houseguest to walk into your bedroom asking for a ride somewhere? (Houseguest has been lent a car of their own to use during their self-invited week in residence). Ten PM (aka six hours before getting up for work)? Eleven (aka five hours before getting up for work)? Midnight (aka four hours before getting up for work)?

'Cause it was midnight. So waddaya say Miss Manners? Just checkin' to make sure I aint way the **** off base here, ya know? Sorry that was rude of me. I didn't get much sleep.

I guess it would depend on the purpose of the midnight excursion.

If it was to the emergency room, due to acute appendicitis, glad to be of assistance.

If it was to run out for a pack of smokes, not so much.

If you loaned the guest a car, why did they need a ride? If it was because they had been drinking and wouldn't get behind the wheel of your car as a result, anytime works for me.

Just started using Uber. Great resource if you have it available in the area.

Best way to handle the guest: "Midnight? Really?"

My manners directly correlate to how quickly I get coffee upon waking up. Otherwise, you get direct and very blunt Mr. Arbtrader.

Maybe crank up the vacuum cleaner when you rise in the AM and invade THEIR bedroom. Payback is a b***h at sunrise. AT.

Author’s reply » Uber: Uber is new to Fairfield County and they are offering five free rides at the moment. So you could get a clean car with a friendly driver arrive almost immediately for free.

I think a better question would be at which of those points do you end the self-invited stay?

    I'd oblige them.

Of course, the ride would end at the Greyhound bus station.

I'm hoping the ride request was to give you notice for the next day or so. Also I'd suggest if bedroom door is closed then anything past primetime should be considered off-limit hours.

In my life some guests only get one invite. Boorish behavior that I am not involved in is a no no. However, if I am feeling sufficiently foolish then I might entertain such nonsense.

I do not take kindly to being woken....period.....by anyone so this would have gone badly in my house.

I might have gotten up, helped them pack and dropped them off at the nearest Bates looking motel...:)

The whole time I would be silent until my heartfelt goodbyes. Would that be too harsh?

Ok maybe I would drop them at a nice place. I don't know but I don't like being woken outsideofmy schedule except for emergencies.

The only other explanation is that this person is an eccentric that typically keeps crazy hours. This person gets an explanation of my boundaries. I have a guy that works for me that will call other employees at 5am or 4am when he discovers something that he feels is important important. We have worked hard to break him of this habit. He never calls me at that time....lol
