  • Three Major Averages Are Positive, And Two Are Negative In A Tug-Of-War.  0 comments
May 3, 2014 9:21 AM | about stocks: TLT, GLD, XLE, DIA, QQQ, SPY

The major averages ended another week straddling their five-week modified moving averages at 16325 Dow Industrials, 1857.2 S&P 500, 4133 Nasdaq, 7538 Dow Transports and 1142.54 Russell 2000. The weekly charts remain negative for the Nasdaq and Russell 2000, while the other three now have positive weekly charts continuing the tug-of-war.

The only new all-time intraday high set last week was 558.29 on Dow Utilities on April 30 and this average ended the week up 10.9% year-to-date beating the five major averages as Transports is in second place up 4%. What's interesting about utilities is that its 2013 high also occurred on April 30 and was the leading index at that time. In second place is the PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) up 7.6%. Dow Industrials is down 0.4% YTD with the S&P 500 up 1.8%, the Nasdaq down 1.3% and the Russell 2000 down 3%.

To confirm a significant market top the major averages need to have weekly closes below semiannual pivots and value levels at 1764.4 S&P 500, 3920 Nasdaq and 7245 Dow Transports.

Favoring the bulls is the fact that Dow Industrials closed the week above its semiannual pivot at 16245, and its quarterly pivot at 16462.

Favoring the bears is the fact that the Russell 2000 remains below its semiannual pivots at 1133.29 and 1130.79.

    The week's value levels are 16198 Dow Industrials, 1841.2 S&P 500, 3936 Nasdaq, 7517 Dow Transports and 1087.86 Russell 2000. This month's risky levels are at new highs;17407 Dow Industrials, 2006.7 S&P 500, 4581 Nasdaq, 8361 Dow Transports and 1261.38 Russell 2000.
