Utilitys Infrastructure, Margin of Safety Continue To Ensure Reliability

NEWARK, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Even as Artesian Resources (NASDAQ: ARTNA), a leading provider of water, wastewater and engineering services on the Delmarva Peninsula, was preparing its state-required tri-annual certificate of self-sufficiency, Mother Nature chose to test the utility through damaging storms and record heat. Artesian officials report the company continues to more than pass that test and exceed the requirements of Delawares Self-Sufficiency Act of 2003.

Strong winds and thunderstorms late last month damaged and interrupted operations at four of the utilitys water treatment stations. As Artesians crews raced to repair and replace equipment struck by lightning during the storms, service to customers remained uninterrupted thanks to the redundancy of the utilitys extensive supply system and the ability to use generators previously installed at key facilities.

In the case of the recent storms, we were able to reroute water flows from multiple sources and engage large-capacity generators to continue to deliver a safe water supply to our customers, said Dian Taylor, chair, president and CEO of Artesian Resources (ARTNA). The heat likewise has not hampered our ability to serve our customers. Our extensive investments in infrastructure and upgrades and, more importantly, the expertise and dedication of Artesian personnel have kept service to our valued customers as reliable as ever during this already challenging summer.

Taylor called Artesians success through the record heat and damaging storms a testament to the assertions made in the companys latest report pursuant to the Water Supply Self-Sufficiency Act of 2003, which requires water utilities in New Castle County to verify every three years that they have adequate supplies of water available, even during times of drought, to meet the present and future needs of this State on a continuing and sustainable basis.

Completed last month, Artesians submission to the Delaware Water Supply Coordinating Council details the companys sources of self supply, available interconnections, water storage capabilities, historic and current water demand and projections for future supply and demand. The report marks the companys fourth consecutive successful completion of the Water Supply Self-Sufficiency Acts requirements and certifies that Artesians sources of supply are adequate to meet peak demand during a record drought without any restrictions.
