Wal-Mart (WMT) reportedly is seeking partners to help build a range of primary care healthcare services, including clinical care, diagnostic and preventative services, health and wellness products, without the traditionally steep prices. Two weeks ago, WMT cut employee healthcare benefits for part-time workers and raised premiums for much of its full-time staff.

Agreed! Most preventive care and minor ailments don't not require a doctor. In any case, this would be better than 45 million people not having any health care - just relying on their own wits.

I am shocked this hasn't been declared illegal by our benevolent government. In all seriousness, if these clinics make any headway in bringing down costs, I expect lots of lobbying and lawsuits from the AMA to legislate them out of existence because of "safety concerns".

However, I don't think it will even get that far. The reason you can't get cheap primary care is that unless you have a licensed doctor on staff you can't provide even the simplest of check-ups. And a licensed doctor is expensive because of the state-sponsored doctor's cartel a.k.a. AMA. So, I really don't see how Wall-Mart can change this.
