Nokia (NOK) unveils $99 Asha smartphone in India. When compared to previous models, the new phone acts more like a fully-featured smartphone with Internet access and a touch-screen with built-in social media apps. The move is part of a push to grab market share in emerging markets, a critical piece of the puzzle in the battle for global smartphone supremacy.

  • Great to see how Nokia is on the road coming back to smartphone market. Lumia smartphones with Windows, Asha smartphones with their own os.
As Mr. Elop said, Nokia is commited to Windows with its Lumia phones. We may see a third os in Nokia smartphones in the future...

  • I hope they stay with MS. That differentiates them from the Android and Apple crowd. Making this new phone is a great move. 99 bucks. with what it offers is good marketing.

  • Of course the Asha is not quite a smartphone. This is why Microsoft is killing Nokia. This should have been a cheap Android phone. But they cannot make it a cheap Android phone due to their deal with MS so now they have an "almost smartphone". Meanwhile, Samsung and their Chinese competitors (who are not dumb enough to tie in with MS) are offering cheap android phones and eating their lunch.

  • An "almost" smartphone, maybe, but is what the Asha 501 lacks really worth hundreds of dollars more? There's a huge potential market out there who could afford such a device, that don't even have the luxury of considering that question! This will be huge, if Nokia gets the word out, and competitors like BBRY had better have an answer for it, or they will miss out bigtime.
