Caterpillar (CAT -1.7%) and the United Steelworkers Union have suspended contract negotiations for mining machinery workers in Milwaukee after talks broke down earlier this week. The union rejected a proposed contract that would have frozen hourly wages for six years, installed a lower wage scale for new hires, altered pension benefits and allowed the company to disregard workers' seniority when selecting employees for short-term layoffs. Workers say they will continue to report and presently have no plans to stage a walkout.

Yes, not the first time that's happened. I grew up near one of their plants, and it always seemed to me the company used rather extreme measures against the workers. I can't pretend to understand it not being a member of either side.

Any wonder the workers refused this offer ?

Would have been bad enough if they received no raise for 1 year, let alone 6 years, given the chances of inflation around the bend, with Uncle Ben's Fed's policies !

I guess you don't know about the "Union 1%'ers do you"? I moved from Peoria because the union wages from CAT inflated the basic cost of living. I could not afford to live there. Grocery prices were inflated, medical expenses were inflated. You name it and it was inflated. I think cities/workers need a living wage but not at the cost of those who are not in a union. Just saying.
