Apple (AAPL) is obsessed with optimizing the user experience, but in Felix Salmon's view, sub-par experiences are inevitable as long as Apple's customers have motivation to avoid the high fees charged by wireless carriers. Whether it's using a mobile hotspot to avoid buying a 3G iPad plan, or using Google Voice (GOOG) to avoid paying for text messages, customers will keep looking for ways to cut corners.

  • My goodness.

I expected a decent article on wireless carrier pricing and service integration with a requisite Apple reference to garner some extra page views.

What I got is a perfect example of the extremes of Apple worship:

"But they’re still bad for Apple, because they defeat the elegant perfection which Apple puts so much effort into getting exactly right."

The author doesn't make a point of any kind. He doesn't advocate for improved wireless speed/coverage or integration or even Apple as a carrier for it's own products.

He's really just saying - to borrow from the article comments - "The problem with Apple nowadays is that *shudder* poor people use their products, ick."

  • That's the case with everything though.. I'm sure we could have hologram tv's but noone with a normal wage would buy such a thing. The trick is making phones and other devices affordable, if the middle class is your target customers, that is.

  • That's great but completely irrelevant to the thrust of the article.
