Wal-Mart (WMT +1%) might be able to beat down competition from the dollar store group (DG, DLTR, FDO, FIVE) if it can achieve two important things: 1) Take traffic directly away from dollar stores by opening new Neighborhood stores in strategic locations. 2) Drive home with consumers its pricing advantage, especially given that a new Bloomberg Industries study found Wal-Mart beat dollar stores on prices almost all the time.

Go to Walmart if you support the following:

In violation of the law, workers are routinely forced to work overtime, often 16-18 hours a day.

Many workers are paid up to 30 percent below their country's legal minimum wage.

Most female workers are denied their legal maternity leave and their benefits.

Workers are rarely, if ever, paid overtime. Although they often work more than twice the legal number of hours in a week, they are not paid more than their regular wages.

The health clinics that many countries require their factories to have often do not exist and workers are NOT provided with basic safety equipment, such as dust masks.

More than 80 percent of Wal-Mart's merchandise suppliers are in China, where workers do not have the right of freedom of association.

All for your imported goods. I support companies that help the US, not leech off it and exploit poor around the world to do so.

Dollar Tree usually beats Walmart on price, quality, and value. Stock and company look great, high margins, lots of snacks, candy, food, daily household items. A local discount grocer chain beats them both often.

DLTR doesn't carry the same selection as WMT, and often carries a smaller version of the same items, so the price ends up being the same or even worse than WMT when you look at the unit cost.

I do agree though that a good grocery store sale +/- coupons is cheaper than WMT
