With 96% of the votes tallied, Vladimir Putin's United Russia party has 49.5% of the vote - down from its mark of 64.3% in 2007. Though analysts predict Putin's presidency bid will still succeed next March, they say the climate will become "very uncomfortable" for him as the Communist party and other opposition parties cut into his once-formidable power base.
